What I love about this show is the flow. There's always a sense of purpose and storytelling in the segues. I just slap 'em together fairly randomly, but this show always feels like I'm being taken on a journey and the DJ is driving is the one who knows where we are going.

I think of you as continuing the great tradition of late '60s/early 70's freeform. I can remember hearing Allison Steele The Nightbird when I was a kid and feeling transfixed by the sense of the journey. Bob Brainen of WFMU has done this for decades. It's DJing that is almost symphonic in its scope. Very few people have the patience and genius to do it well. This tradition is in good hands. . .

If you are interested in the history of radio and where freeform as a specific genre of radio fits in, I recommend Susan Douglas' book, "Listening In: Radio and the American Imagination" -- The whole book is great, but her chapter on the 60s, which focuses on Boss Radio and Freeform is so relevant to what we are all trying to keep alive on the R&SS. The shows here can almost all be located on a spectrum between those two forms that emerged in the 60's. This show is probably the most pure "Classic Freeform" show on the stream.

let me know the title if you can recall. I got me a small library on radio scholarship. Douglas rightly points out that radio scholarship is ridiculously limited in comparison to film scholarship -- mostly because most radio has been lost. Still it's easily one of the most important media forms of the 20th century. Yet it's been almost ignored when compared to film and TV!

Radio Voices: American Broadcasting, 1922-1952 by Michelle Himes is another good, readable book on radio scholarship. But it stops short of the 60's -- which is what the R&SS is all about!
