I always imagine John Lee Hooker descended from innumerable generations of Houngans & Griots & incarnated in the 20th Century USA to transmit the vital Spirit to our parched imbalanced Souls.
When drawing up the shortlist of immediate precedents to Rawk'n'Roll I would always tend to omit Hooker somehow. I can say I remedied that @ least & @ last.
Less thoughtful: K8 got a free ticket to They Might Be Giants tonight so she can review the show, and I'm so depressed not to be going too that I just ate a whole order of baked ziti. And regret nothing!
man, i have a 396-song John Lee Hooker spotify playlist and listened to at least as many versions again to make it; several albums and comps...yet you're turning me onto sides/songs i've never heard! Thank you!
Love it. Like TheBlues weren't even that much of a Form til people like TheHook were finished with it maybe. One sense anyhow. The History is rich & long...
chresti, it has long been my guess that one of Lou Reed's personal goals was to make sure no one could sing along to any song at his concerts. And that all the ways he'd change up the songs were totally premeditated just to mess with the audience.
I have to say, I admire the commitment to the bit.
ultra that reminds me of a 2nd-person story i've told before...
a friend was a bicycle messenger in nyc c.1981. he was instructed high up in an office building and when he got to the destination the receptionist said go ahead in. there was a wrecked cop car upside-down in the person's office.
unfortunately he didn't meet the recipient of the message but it was (obviously) John Belushi's office.
Only heard a portion of show, but any and all portions are GRRRRRREAT! (Thurl shout-out.) Of course. Thank you for these musical blessings on this Friday.

coel- also possibly in an altered state?
Handy Haversack:
We the Downtoen Soulers denounce explicit and implicit racism.
We condemn the culture of white supremacy, which enables the brutalization of black people and other communities of color.
We support Black Lives Matter and the movement it stands for.
Have good MLK weekends, friends. Keep fighting.
