Jeff:

I must’ve seen Jeff Beck more than a dozen times over the years. I had one “interaction” with him. It was at the Palladium in 1976, and Jeff was on that tour w/Jan Hammer and a then unknown band named Heart opened. I went alone and had a great seat (maybe, 3rd row dead center). There was a completely f’d up guy sitting next to me, and he insisted on talking to me. I tried to be polite, but , when Jeff came on, I told him to chill. I’m looking at the stage, and, the next thing I know, the guy started to wail on me. Almost before I could react, the security threw his ass out. Jeff was looking at me with an expression that said “what the f’k was that???”
  11:24am

Caught that same show, Jeff. My first concert ever. Memorable, but without the drama in the 3rd row.

Two other second hand anecdotes. My late friend Kevin went to see the Jeff Beck Group at Fillmore East. He and his buddies got to 2nd Ave late, and, instead of going in, decided to get high on the street. They were so high that they missed the opening acts and were a block away when JBG came on. He told me it was so loud that they could hear it on 7th St, and they NEVER WENT INSIDE! It was too freakin’ loud!
The other one is that I was talking to someone outside a gig in Long Island. He told me he saw the Yardbirds at his high school in LI, and both Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page were in the band at that gig.

Been working Saturdays so great to be able to tune in and hear this wonderful tribute to the amazing Jeff Beck. Many thoughtful comments -- I will add it impressed me that in his later career he had strong women in his bands, not (just) as eye candy. Gave a feminine dynamic missing in most rock guitar jock settings.

My fave LP is "Rough and Ready." "Situation" set the template for Eddie Van Halen to my mind. Just better though.

Jeff Beck could play Mary Had A Little Lamb and make it into a masterpiece.
  12:34pm
Jeff:

@Brian in UK - Jeff might’ve owned a bunch of guitars, but, when he played live, it was not uncommon for him to play one Strat for the whole night. No pick, hardly any pedals, never saw him tune (I don’t recall) and no guitar tech to wipe his ass. Just wood, strings, whammy bar, knobs, amp and his magic fingers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm
StringOFperils:

Jeff, on the Strat: “It doesn’t feel like a guitar at all. It’s an implement that is my voice. “A Les Paul feels like a guitar and I play differently on that and I sound too much like someone else. “With the Strat, instantly it becomes mine, so that’s why I’ve welded myself to that.

@wmfromD: Another example of my pedantry (is that a word? I mean know-it-allism), but the Yardbirds actually recorded at Phillips Recording (Sam's larger successor to Sun) in Memphis. Sun was unusable at that point in time, it was restored in the 80s (they did a great job too!)

Thinking of the Yardbirds go me to think about Giorgio Gomelsky. Arguable, a pivotal figure in that band’s history as well as the Stones and others. In the late ‘70s/early ‘80s he was heavily involved in the NYC scene with Material and Gong. He lived in Manhattan for many years and had a place in Chelsea. I went there around 15 years ago to see my friend Rick’s band Grip Weeds. At the end of the evening, Giorgio was sitting somewhere, and I went over and had a real nice conversation with him.

@Jeff: When preparing this show, Bob and I got into several conversations re: Giorgio. Giorgio was quite a figure.

Dean:

Consider five years later, the early 1971 release of The Yes Album, featuring "Starship Trooper." Steve Howe and Jeff Beck are two very different rock guitarists, but where Beck in the '60s seems to be anticipating the future, Howe wants to ground the fledgling genre in its rock roots. Almost as if they're shaking hands.
