i can't stand Van's voice either; but i once liked it.
i don't remember at all what astral weeks sounds like. i must've heard it as i was already realizing how very limited he was/is as a vocalist -interesting at times and seemingly genuinely soulful for fleeting moments, a long, long, long time ago... but limited.
so my assessment may've been unfair, as it did come along soon after his excellent work with Them, and directly before one of his extremely few excellent albums, moondance.
so, as i did not find my copy in my mess here, i'm excited to hear it now.

My antipathy towards Van Morrison has a deeply personal dimension. In the 1970's a person who was in the same social sphere as I, loved him insanely. One day he came over to our house and started making a hissy fit because I was listening to something contemporary that displeased him.(He was mad because I got the girl he was mad about) He never forgave me or her. Later when we broke up. I got together with yet another one of his failed conquests. Did this make me happy? Not really. It was quite sad really.

Van Morrison often thrown in with the Dylans & the Great Writers. But really he's like a Soul Singer in the throws of something himself ...on the borderlands of Articulacy whatsoever. In a way that's what this is about. Part JamesJoyce but equally some other drunk & some holy roller having an epiphany. Not everybody's chosen religion - but neither the album everyone else had made.

An "early spring" sound - I often associate sounds with feelings or places, I suppose it might work with that. It does work well with this rainy cold drizzly day here.

I would say that it's very "un-standard", unique is a word often used to praise art, but for those who listen to jazz or soul, this definitely isn't on the same page as what is normally considered jazz or soul. Actually it's more "psychedelic" in many ways, an observation about this album I previously didn't notice.

Despite our Freeform ethos and *extremely* varied listeners, there are certain conventions that develop, and some listeners carry forth stronger than others. E.g., Don McLean is awful, Van Morrison is awful...but also an anti-elite streak. So if music journalists say Astral Weeks is the exception to that rule, they'll make a bigger point of voicing their displeasure than if it wasn't really mentioned.

"For one thing, what it means is Richard Davis's bass playing, which complements the songs and signing all the way with a lyricism that's something more than inspired, something that has been touched, that's in the realm of the miraculous. The whole ensemble – Larry Fallon's string section, Jay Berliner's guitar (he played on Mingus' BLACK SAINT AND THE SINNER LADY), Connie Kay's drumming – is like that: they and Van sound like they're not just reading but dwelling inside of each other's minds."

Not a fan of Van, or Mark E. Smith or Don Maclean or Richard Harris or Sonic Youth. WFMU or popularity of an artist does not "dictate' my like or dislike of them. I listen, I may like some aspect of these songs (like most of the bass playing so far) or maybe nothing but hey, they all have/had success in a very tough biz. I'm happy for them all. Over-analyzation is a common thread on these boards.

My take so far (having tuned in just now): A lovely bed of instruments - but I just can't get past the voice. Maybe there's good songwriting crafstmanship behind what we're hearing, or maybe there isn't. The guy may even have a story to tell. But with the incessant verbal squawking that keeps tumbling out over the impeccable musical arrangements, I'm not sure I'll ever get to know. Listener Robert:

The Avars were a semi-civilized people in central Europe. They were masters at raiding, plundering all nations and then just hoarding the spoils. They had no idea what else to do with them, so they just hoarded them. Because so much of what they plundered was stuff used as money, and modern banking had not been invented, they therefore plunged Europe into a deflationary depression for generations.

Eventually, after repeated campaigns, the Franks conquered the Avars. The Avar land was surrounded by fortifications. When the Carolingians liberated the spoils, they didn't hoard it, they distributed it among their cronies, and although you'd think this would result only in a transfer of wealth to their crown, it eventually caused a diffusion of all that money -- and an economic boom throughout Europe! This period was so important in Europe's history that it was retold allegorically as the Niebelung's song.

Oh, the innermost of the Avar fortresses? It was called...the Ring.

It’s not that I dismiss any music or musician that has a cringe factor in the lyrics. I take everything in context of the time and culture to some extent. I just don’t expose myself unnecessarily to it unless there is another strong draw of some kind.

on a not so light note, I always wonder if we knew more about the species with whom we share this planet and less about type face font names...we might not be in the midst of the 6th mass extinction now....crap!

Wendy, way up there, yeah, part of it has to do with the close mic'g, but she also wanders into Eilish territory with the almost muttered word or two.

The story about Iggy encountering John Wayne shortly after he moved to LA is a good one.

Being Irish, Van was not only required listening, but required liking. His being from Belfast songled him out as "more Irish". I have a soft spot for him, but completely understand the modern day dimissal of his talent/attitude.

Caught the tail end of that Van Morrison. I've heard of Van Morrison but never associated that voice with him. I was kind of expecting something closer to Van Halen, maybe?

I learned something today, for better or worse. I really wonder what the songs would sound like if he actually sang. Let's just say I prefer Bob Dylan.
