Has in fact been said getting Astrologers to agree is like Herding Cats ...overtly said with frustration - but with I think a presumed subtext of pride...

In the Chinese System you get a Month, Day & Hour as well as Year Animal - the Four Pillars :
psychicscience.org...
- & as you might expect - the subject of Chinese Astrology & Metaphysics as is rich, deep, wide & complex as their Culture suggests it must be...
Ciggy:

- but it surely is traceable. certainly the modern ("western") astrology but even the ancient one, at least several millenia.
...regarding animal characteristics i fairly trustingly refer to native american culture , and animal "totems". ...although some asian animals wouldn't be considered... but then - who's to decide what animal characteristics a dragon has?!

I see it as essentially ~ approximately every Continent has their own native Calendar - & corresponding Astrology. Much - I posit - like the situation with Scales & Musics ! (& I further posit - not coincidentally ??) As for the Americas (as named by Europeans for an Italian Mapmaker) - the only real PreColumbian one known & successfully researched is the MesoAmerican (Mayan~Aztec) one :
www.azteccalendar.com
www.mayanmajix.com...
- which is both highly developed & quite independent of Europe or Asian ones indeed.
Dragon is the only 'imaginary' creature in the Chinese Zodiac - which otherwise has been termed pretty 'barnyard' (people are not always flattered to be called Rats or Boars - but again, context). I think this reflects the very practical & down-to-earth traditional Culture of China - also reflected in say Taoism as a philosophy of Natural Cycles & Elements & the like. Which - I happen to admire & appreciate about it...
Dragons are in fact said to have 'larger than life' personalities (John Lennon, Zappa, Dali for examples) - to speak of one characteristic...
Dragon in the Chinese symbology is nonetheless very much a Force of Nature - as you probly know, rather distinct from the Western conception...
