A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

↳ Song: ""12 O'Clock"" by "Vangelis"
I should acknowledge that this was, and is, the opening theme music to "Over The Edge," started by Don Joyce and now hosted by Wobbly and KROB, and was one of the most informative radio experiences of my life. I spent years just listening to old Over the Edge episodes and imagining what I would do if I had a show. So now I'm doing those things, I hope. But I always think of Over The Edge when I listen to this song, and this album, because it is such a strong song in general, and I heard it at the beginning of every OTE episode.

I found this, and many, MANY other Vangelis albums, for a dollar apiece at various thrift stores. In some ways, he's still not very respected, and his albums aren't collectible. But they're all very unique, and evocative of the strange places electronic music can take us.

Hey Austin! Thanx for this trippy trip around the globe.

And yes, for years i would always check the "electronic" section. It was usually pretty skimpy, and all those Vangelis (and Tangerine Dream, and Jean-Michel Jarre, and W. Carlos and Tomita) albums were in every one. And they all cost only a couple bucks. Probably still do.

Oh yeah, you still find Tomita and Tangerine Dream all over the place. But I have yet to find a Jean-Micahel Jarre record in the wild. I have a couple Carlos records, but most the Switch on Bach stuff. The other Carols albums are becoming a little more rare, because people are hip now.

I probably need to see the dentist soon. I have a regular doctor's appointment tomorrow, just to make sure I'm not going completely off the rails, medically. She's nice, but I always feel like I'm failing at test at the doctor's office, and I have never feel like I know how to pass it.

That's amazing about Jarre! Seemed like copies of "Oxygene" and "Équinoxe" followed me around from store to store. Maybe he was big in L.A., and Jarre-mania skipped OR.

Once, as a teen, I hitchhiked with some friends, when we made some poor choices and wound up win Sisters without a car or transport back to Cottage Grove. It was a poor decision, but some hippies picked us up and give us beer, even. They had wonderful dogs and didn't mind the stories, and yes, of course they were on their way to Eugene. On the subject of trains: my dad worked for SP Railroad for years, and occasionally, for work purposes, they would jump up on trains and ride them for the sake of convenience.
