He only got his first Jazzmaster when he moved from Delaware to New York, and lived through the supposed ‘surf guitar’s newfound popularity that he part-started. “Now they’re up to $400, probably because Elvis Costello had his picture taken with ’em so many times.” guitar.com...

Strats have the three pickups - & then the inbetween settings everybody did so they made it standard. That is - they are versatile. Which is surely why a Hendrix adored them. With Fender Strats & Teles - there is the thing of too much Treble especially with - the Treble pickup. Tho that let's you pierce. I worship Strats but one tries to not to sound like a Surf Gittarist with too small an amp all the time.

With guitars..it's all about your abilities, your signal path & what feels good in your hands..

In 1965 Fender sold to CBS..& things went from being very hands on to mass produced.

Quality suffered. Same for Gibson.

I've played Fenders, Gibsons, Jerry Jones', Danelectros Kays, National Electrics, Supros, No Names, you name it.

I have small hands & moderate technical ability, so for me , it's something light with a small neck radius.

The rest can be attained via your signal path.

Are you a guitar>Cord>amp (notice I didn't say wireless transmitter, hate those f'n things) person or do you have a pedal board the size of NASA mission control,or maybe a software amp modeler.

Today..almost anything's possible & a lot of what the argument's about is "status"

I recently sold a single p/u 1976 Fender MusicMaster short scale (a D rated student guitar) for near $1K. I swapped the original soft jazz sounding p/u with a Seymour Duncan Cool rails stripped it & did a quality re-paint & it sounded & played great.. It's all preference

same here, I saw Jimmy Rip version of Television twice, 2013 and 2014, loved it. I also loved the 2005 London show where Richard Lloyd was still there, but that show resembled My Bloody Valentine (!) in that the vocals were close to inaudible. The show they did the next day (both in London, June 2005, Patti Smith's Meltdown) was rather different in that respect, sadly I wasn't there for the second show but heard it from audience recordings only. It just goes to show that there was this degree of unpredictability with Television (like that aforementioned Central Park incident).

That's why I say "it's all preference"

No real right or wrong only what appeals to the player.

What I say can be debated till one's blue, but in the end..it's all what suits the player.

I've watched Eddie Kirkland (late blues great) play a Decca hollow body electric guitar with p/u's duct taped in their mounts with sound that would blow peoples minds & I've seen guys with multi thousand dollar guitars that had tone that sucked.

I sold a 1965 National Res-O-Glass Electric a few years back that I found in the trash. I cleaned it up, checked it out, replaced the little plastic top hat selector switch cover & sold it for $3500.00 .

It's like real estate.
Market price.

I offered that guitar to Jack White (he likes those Airline/Eastwood & National's) through his management company first. They passed.

When I was selling mine Ric Nielsen had one, signed, up for sale at the same time, same site.

Mine sold first :)

I used to hit New Paltz in the late 70's. The bars on Main Street or we'd head out to Speakers out on 32 (?) then over to Rosendale & Uncle Willy's Astoria Hotel & The Stourbridge Lion, then home to Port Jervis. Really fun times

Course Bass is a really interring place twixt the Rhythm Section & the Harmonic aspect of the Musics. The simplest position in a band in one way & completely not in another. & then - everybody is playing Rhythm - also true...
