Thompson to me always remarkable for being the one on the shortlist of Greats with the least debt to Blues (& more UK Folk). I left the radio on when I feel asleep, and a great record woke me up at any 5:30. It was two unreleased takes of Django Reinhardt and André Ekyan doing Pennies From Heaven, on speed. The released version is relaxed, as you'd expect. These takes sounded like they were trying to pick up all the pennies while rushing for a train.

Like you, I have no problem appreciating the artistic results, I just think it behoves us to remember the circumstances of their creation and keep the 'Beefheart is a wonder' rhetoric a little in check. "I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. The released version is relaxed, as you'd expect. These takes sounded like they were trying to pick up all the pennies while rushing for a train.
