I gotta think Clay picks the songs. I think he selects music to expose the kids to something new (to them) and he clearly has favorites that get played each week, like the Morphine song Thursday. Heck, maybe he just plays that on Thursdays. But Clay was in a band, knows his music and I’d be pretty shocked if he didn’t pick his tunes

Okay, thanks. Admittedly 3 hours every single weekday is a lot for anyone to program, and even with his one-hour weekly "Dusty Show" he was running on 2 hrs sleep to put together his recorded items and flew by the seat of his pants on the live items. But even with Clay's "bad" music, people joyfully engaged him on how bad his selections were, while totally supportive of him personally and loving the whole show!

@coela, Ike: Certainly it's a "compromise" for our ethos. At least with the previous JM/Nachum setup there were web-only programs for those outside the region. But then again, if this has brought some financial security to FMU, I can't really protest that small concesssion (particularly as I'm not awake for that time).

I miss the Dusty Show too. But as John Lennon would say, "You still have the Archives.."

Clay is the only DJ who gets paid - & the Morning Show is the Big Money show for fundraising (if not mistaken) - the whole point of having a Morning Show (like everybody else) where there used to be Jewish programming that made a lot of money.

It's interesting that there's probably a lot of disjointness between the sets of WFMU listeners generally and those of Wake and Bake, just as there was between the Hebrew and Jewish program (and its successor, JM in the AM) and the rest of the WFMU audience.

Actually, though, I did listen to a fair amount of that morning show at times when I had a car because I was commuting and WFMU was a preset on the radio; that's probably still true of many listeners.
