"Though no one has pinpointed the exact origin of the holiday, one place to start is ancient Rome.
The Romans' celebrations were violent. From Feb. 13 to 15, the Romans celebrated the feast of Lupercalia. The men sacrificed a goat and a dog, then whipped women with the hides of the animals they had just slain.
The Roman romantics "were drunk. They were naked," Noel Lenski, now a religious studies professor at Yale University, told NPR in 2011. Young women would line up for the men to hit them, Lenski said. They believed this would make them fertile."

by the way i had to look up "frank booth" and no, not at all.
i raged on a racist in the comments a week or 2 ago and between dj jim the poet and station manager ken i ended up getting persecuted for it, i assume because of a poor choice of insults in my subconsciously trying to attack the bigot on his/her own level...the racism removed but my fowl posts left there to paint me as a bad guy, as it will be seen without context.
heh, frank booth! 'been 35-40 years since i saw that movie
