It's still a bowling alley!

Quick hi, check in after meditation (like this Flurry...)

scuzz country!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07pm
Sam Segal:

Howdy, zzz! Listening to that Flurry song, I was thinking, "Man, I wish more bands sounded like this." Scuzz country rules. We need more!

Happy Wednesday night, Manta!

Bowling and rocking! A tonic for this 10PM
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm
chresti:

Hi Sam, you are the listening choice currently.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17pm
Sam Segal:

Welcome, drowsy! Anybody remember their most recent bowling score? I think mine was in the realm of 100ish.
  10:17pm
headcleaner:

"BOWL" ... is it a directive? A prognostication? A lament? What does the otherwise vacant 2-story wall signify? What's with sedan with the matching paint job? And the unused triangular patch of land? You got me stumped with this one, Sam
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17pm
Sam Segal:

↳ chresti @10:16
And I am grateful for the choice you've made, Chresti!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm
Sam Segal:

↳ headcleaner @10:17
I do take it as a directive, headcleaner. And I aim to bowl at my earliest convenience as a result.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19pm
coelacanth∅:

hey is that your k-car? how much you want for it?
- i've got $23
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20pm
coelacanth∅:

hay Sam and stablemates, unstablemates
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20pm
Sam Segal:

↳ coelacanth∅ @10:19
$23 is a prime number...not a bad deal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21pm
coelacanth∅:

cash,Sam. you're not gonna do better.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm
Sam Segal:

And in fact, I could do a whole lot worse.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm
drowsy:

I struggle to break into the hundred mark with bowling too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm
coelacanth∅:

that is a k-car right?
or is it a ford... in which case i rescind my offer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm
Sam Segal:

I am very streaky with bowling. Sometimes I roll three strikes in a row, and then a bunch of gutters.
  10:25pm
Dean:

My son at eight or nine(?) was on a bowling league. He cracked 100 pretty regularly. Won an award at a tournament.

What the hell is this Skeidsvoll? Remarkable.
  10:26pm
Dean:

I recently bowled for the first time in ages. First roll was a strike, to the amazement of everybody watching...but the game hadn't officially begun, so no score.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26pm
Sam Segal:

These Finns, Dean, I'm telling you. They're making wonderful jazz up there.
  10:27pm
Dean:

I still dig the Swede Arne Domnerus, from a prior generation.
  10:29pm
Dean:

Our local alley, a true community gathering place, closed during the shutdown. There's a place a few miles away on Alameda island, an amazing over-the-top glitzy joint with the whole deal: alleys, bar, arcade, PA too loud... Fun now and then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm
Ike:

I live near a bowling alley but I've never been in that particular one. I guess I should check it out sometime, though I'm not very good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm
Sam Segal:

I'm in need of a good bowling alley. The one I've gone to in the past is in an extremely yuppified pocket of Williamsburg and it takes hours to get a lane on the weekends. Been meaning to check out Melody Lanes in Sunset Park.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:33pm
Manta:

I had my 8th birthday party at a bowling alley. it was.... ok
  10:34pm
Dean:

Right. The Alameda alleys are hella expensive, where the ones in Albany were not.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm
Ike:

↳ Sam Segal @10:32
That's the one! From what I can tell, it doesn't look too yupp-a-licious, ha ha. And the lines are usually longer at the famous taco truck around the corner than to bowl, I think.
Avatar 10:36pm
northguineahills:

↳ Sam Segal @10:32
I went to a Bowling Alley for a bachelor party on E Flatnbush and Snyder run by an elderly Jamaican couple. They had $2 red stripes. Unfortunately, it's now closed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36pm
zzz:

love how walking into (most?) bowling alley is like stepping out of a time machine back to the 70s/early 80s

unless it is yuppified as mentioned
above, or black lights/glow in the dark which is pretty whack
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm
drowsy:

WFMU being truly worldwide, I am hoping for a good candlepin vs duckpin beef.

My late uncle, when he was a child, was a manual pinsetter, before they automated.
  10:37pm
Dean:

Or stepping out of time into the '50s.
  10:38pm

This is an Anat Fort record of which I'm unaware! Nice. Dave Sewelson interviewed her sister some time ago. Was a great show.

Isn't the Gutter still open (besides Brooklyn Bowl)?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm
Sam Segal:

↳ northguineahills @10:38
I am sad to report that the Gutter is the yuppified bowling alley of which I speak. The space is still divey, but it is overrun.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm
zzz:

been to brooklyn bowl a million times, but never bowled there
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm
Sam Segal:

↳ Manta @10:33
I believe I also had my 8th birthday (or somewhere thereabouts) at a bowling alley. The place was called Tuttles. All of the guests signed a bowling pin for me, which was stood on top of the bookshelf in my bedroom throughout my entire childhood.

TDK60:

Hi Sam.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm

TDK! Hello! What is your bowling high score?
Avatar 10:52pm

Golly, I'm lousy at the game, but I have had fun with it.
Avatar 10:53pm
northguineahills:

↳ Sam Segal @10:40
I always thought as Brooklyn Bowl as even more yuppified.

"....entire childhood." so, you still have it on your bookshelf?

My 8th bday was at Putt-Putt. my ninth was at Bowlmore Lanes....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm
Sam Segal:

↳ northguineahills @10:53
I think it might be in the closet of my childhood bedroom now, but I'll have to check next time I'm there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm
Sam Segal:

I knew a guy who rolled several 300 games, and it always confused me that he wasn't a professional. It seems like a person who is capable of playing a game perfectly should be able to make money doing that.

I wasn't sure whether to play that Ribot / Fefer duo track, because I thought I should feature the full quartet...but that track is just so good, I had to play it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm

i have shared my deep love of jeff parker on here, which i know is shared by SS and others. i am inspired by the roger ebert “rule” that any movie featuring harry dean stanton or m. emmet walsh cannot be bad, and extending it to any group/record featuring jeff parker or chad taylor will be great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm

I love it, zzz. The Ebert principle holds up with me both cinematically and musically.

↳ Song: "Tryin' To Get To Heaven" by "Lucinda Williams"
Lucinda Williams is playing at The City Winery in a few months. I waited a few days to order, checked who could go, they sold out in no time. Really want to see her...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm

Oh man. I bet those tickets will go for a pretty penny on the secondary market. My friend saw her recently in Austin, Minnesota, home of the Hormel company (LW did not play at Hormel headquarters, to be clear).
