"I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played that punk song though. I like Joe Belock a lot." (Visit homepage.)

Remember reading Maria Booker was so self-conscious about singing with these luminaries - that is why she breaks down & weeps - & then they all rise musically in appreciation. Very moving.
John Allen:
Passaic River Blues:
"if he had only been the music director of one of art blakey's most admired jazz messenger groups, it would have been enough;
if he had only recorded his 1960s blue note albums, it would have been enough;
if he had only been part of miles-herbie-wayne-ron-tony (the second great quintet) it sure nuff yes indeed would have been enough;
if he had only pioneered fusion music with miles, on blue note, and by co-founding weather report, it would have been enough;
if he had only pioneered world music with his 1974 evergreen with milton nascimento, "native dancer," it would have been enough;
if he had only revived advanced acoustic jazz in the miles-herbie-wayne-ron-tony tradition by a series of tours and recordings in the '80s with herbie hancock, it would have been enough;
if he had only led a magnificent quartet in the 21st century (which I saw play several times i'm happy to say) it would have been enough;
if he were only one of the great tenor sax masters, it would have been enough;
if he had only advanced the soprano sax beyond where john coltrane left it; it would have been enough;
if he had only led his own groups, it would have been enough;
if he were only known as a sideman for blakey and miles, it would have been enough;
if he had only composed such gems as "footprints" and "aung san suu kyi" it would have been enough.
in other words, he did it all!"
