You can hear, in the background of the recording of this episode, a faint recording of a previous episode of Box 13. This has happened on a number of Old Radio shows, depending on who was archiving the show, and how they did it. Box 13 is usually very well preserved, but some of these episodes near the end of the run have these "ghost" recordings in the background.

↳ Song: ""The Blue Moon"" by "Bold Venture"
The beginning of this episode - and quite a few epiosdes - is rather abrupt. I'm mentioned this before: Bold Venture did not seem to be "archived" as carefully as some of the other Old Radio shows, and the musical transitions, and beginnings / endings of shows, seems to be sort of hap-hazardly edited by someone in the past.

I would have thought that a show featuring Bogie and Bacall would have been very carefully archived by someone somewhere.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:38pm
Austin Rich:

↳ Charles @9:36
I think, because "Santana Productions" was Bogart's own company, it was only as careful as the boss required. And radio, in those days, wasn't seen as something to archive, but something that would air and was then disposable. So often, transcription discs were found in dumpsters at the end of the week, to be scavenged by people who realized they might have value.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:41pm
Austin Rich:

I always wanted to get into the hobby of Transcription Disc collecting. I have three. When I worked at KPSU, they used to have at transcription disc player, and I was tempted to buy it from them and get into digitizing old discs. But that's the kind of hobby that becomes a full-time job, in and of itself.

For a long time, it was the movie that all TV shows would eventually parody, and everyone would claim was "the best film ever." (There's even a Red Dwarf parody of it.) But when I finally sat down and watched it, it's a pretty good spy movie, set during WWII, in a sort of part of the world that's not often thought of during the war... and of course, there's a romance. It's almost the perfect movie, when you add Bogart.

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:24pm
Austin Rich:

There is a radio show that I'm quite fond of, "The Adventures of Rocky Jordan," that is an attempt to make a radio show out of that film, though heavily re-written since Bogart was not interested. In this radio show, "Rocky Jordan" runs a bar in an Egyptian city, sort of like Casablanca, and similar "adventures" happen in that show. I'm a big Rocky Jordan fan, and I'll probably run it on her at some point.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:26pm
Austin Rich:

"Bold Venture" was the "compromise" show that Bogart made, instead of doing a Casablanca show. It's set in a bar that he runs, sort of like his Rick Character in Casablanca. And like the movie, Bogart's bar is located in an exotic location, with a trusted musician who he confides in. But he also mixes in a lot of stuff from "To Have and Have Not," which involved Bacall and a Boat, and has a lot of the other tropes at play.

↳ Song: ""The Kaleidoscope"" by "Dimension X"
The sound quality of this episode is REALLY bad. It must have come from a fan home-recording. Since it is based on a Ray Bradbury story, I'm sure that's the main reason people are interested in this episode, quality be damned. I did some EQ to clean it up, and some noise reduction. But there's only so much I could do.

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:34pm
Austin Rich:

Keen-eared listeners will notice that, last week, on Dimension X, the announcer said (at the end of the show) that Dimension X was "moving" to a new day and time. However, this episode - by all accounts - aired the same day of the week, one week later. I'm not sure what actually happened in 1951 that prevented the time change, but since there were only a few more episodes in the run, perhaps most program directors just let the show keep going in the same time slot. Who can say? I wish I knew some Dimension X fan from back in the day...

Given that "Dimension X" was being canceled soon, and given that both Ray Bradbury and George Lefferts - who adapted this story - seemed to enjoy that bit where the astronaut tells off the captain of the ship, I can't help but think there's more to that scene than just the surface. I'm sure everyone working on this show wanted to "tell off" the superiors, when they knew this show was getting canceled.

There's a lot of this episode that seems particularly grim, and very much pushing the envelope of what they have done before. (Even for this show.) There's a part of me that thinks, again, because they were getting canceled, they were sort of "going all out" with this one.
