The first time I got into the water on the NY/NJ coastline I shouted "what is this garbage?!" because it was 70 degrees. I grew up going to beaches on the Gulf of Mexico, you know, 80+ degrees. From Room Full of Mirrors: Cropper was in a studio lockdown when a secretary came and told him that there was a young guy there to see him; he told her to send him away. Cropper worked until six o'clock. As he walked out of the studio, the secretary came up to him and said, "That guy's still here." Jimi had waited all day. "I had no idea who he was," Cropper recalled, "but I met with him." He found Hendrix to be remarkably polite, and Jimi knew Cropper's entire discography. When asked about his own background, Jimi said modestly, "I play a little guitar, up in new York, and a few other places." Cropper asked if Jimi had done any session work, and Hendrix named off his Isley Brothers sides and "Mercy, Mercy," a Don Covay record he had played on that was the first record featuring Jimi to break the Top 40. Cropper was impressed: "You played on that? That's one of my favorite songs. Pleased to meet you."
