The big takeaway for me in junior high was my name. In 1968 there was this older tough guy who had his locker next to mine. One day after school he was talking to one of this gangster friends " That Franco Twinkie is going to get his ass kicked after school." It was the funniest thing I ever heard. I had no idea who he was talking about, but the poor kid inspired so much hilarity I had to do him justice fifty years after the fact.

Some fucking looser cholos in my class hated me because I wore torn levi's and would come to school barefoot. I got a lot of "Hey surfer!" shit. One day three hoods surrounded me in the breezeway. I was saying my prayers when a new kid I met that summer saved my ass. Him and I would sit in the back of the class and talk about music. He was a drug dealer, so the cholos backed off when he told them "He's cool man, lay off!! We're still friends.

I was 4'11" until I was 14 (then I grew 11 inches in one year), so, I was an easy target. I would be playing basketball, w/ 6' 14 year olds, and one guy would just keep on punching me bloody. But, I'd get up every time as if nothing happened, until after a while, his friends started to hold him back. Same w/ football. After they realized they couldn't make me submit, they wanted to be my friend. fuck that noise. I also started to make friends w/ the popular girls by helping them w/ their homework. I then became untouchable. The captain of the cheerleader squad, who became my best friend, ended up quitting cheerleading to become a goth queen... oh, jr high...only one stabbing a few broken noses...

I did great - small handful of smartest in the place - long as I could do homework in school - @ study periods. But if it needed homework to keep up - I had no discipline or structure or motivation to do that - early GenX latchkey kid I was. & here I am today (nowhere).
As for gym & jocks & bullies & trendies - the entire social aspect of school - I hated it utterly & completely. I had a few people I related to - the stoners as it happened - & everybody else was the antagonist essentially. & the rest of my like also in essence.
