Jeff:

In 1973, I was up in Binghamton, NY “studying”. We used to get the Village Voice up there, and I noticed that Gram Parsons was playing Max’s. A couple of months later, Howlin’ Wolf was there. I dug Gram, but I idolized The Wolf. I also figured I’d better see The Wolf while I still could and can see Gram another time. So, I made the trip down to see The Wolf, and what a night it was! Little did I know I’d get to see The Wolf again, but we all know what happened to Gram.

Gene Clark was contemporaneous with that song, and would have been close to the centre of its creation I think, although it came from here, Canada. Ian and Sylvia would have been listening to the New Christy Minstrels, a musical unit that Gene Clark passed through for a time. There was a meeting of minds, a movement, a change in the air...

Around 15-20 years ago, I had a dream that Roger McGuinn was playing the Village Vanguard with a big band. Except, the players were all new grass cats like Sam Bush, and they were doing incredible arrangements of Byrds material. I dug it and thought it might work in reality. I had McGuinn’s e-mail address and sent him my idea. Never heard back. With the exception of the Sweetheart of the Rodeo tour, Roger just keeps doing the same one man shtick he’s been doing.

They had some great shows at the SUNY Binghamton dining halls. I once sat at the feet of Dizzy Gillespie when he played a flash gig at Hinman.

I say this at every opportunity, but Rocky Top is Tennessee's state song (surprisingly given current events, something by Stephen Foster didn't make the cut.)

That was a great time for music in Binghamton. Were there bands at the Turf Exchange by then?
  12:23pm
Todd E:

Jeff and Secret Squirrel, looks like we were at some of the same shows in Binghamton. I had loads of fun times there. Many great concerts on campus, some standouts for me were Sun Ra, Unholy Modal Rounders, Weather Report in Social Room. Kinks, Jackson Browne, Hot Tuna in the gym. Plus shows at arena downtown, Ithaca, Syracuse.

Yes, the Turf Exchange had Zobo Funn Band every Saturday night. Kevin the owner never checked IDs 😉

Yep, Ithaca had a great scene with Zobo and the Peabody Band. Real originals who never quite broke through.

Amazing shows at SUNY Binghamton then for sure. Leon Thomas, Freddie Hubbard (touring behind Red Clay), The Beach Boys (touring Holland), and Tim Buckley opening for Zappa + the Petite Wazoo. Buckley was incredible.

wmfromD: they did indeed play Festival Express as a 4-piece. A song is in the film, I think it’s Lazy Day (it’s also on YouTube). It’s better than one might think, but they do miss that 3rd voice.

Secret Squirrel, yup saw Dave Bromberg and Dave van Ronk in Social Room. And Bromberg also opened for electric Tuna in the gym (1975 rampage heavy Tuna!) I hung at Turf Exchange a lot, loved Zobo. They released an album a few years later but it was watered down. Original lead guitarist David Torn went on to do lots of cool stuff, solo and as a sideman.

Todd E: I have a vinyl copy of Zobo’s self-released promo album, which they sold at gigs. It has a brown cover with red lettering. Great songs, shitty recording and production. The drums sound like cardboard. But still the best document of the band in their Turf Exchange days, aside from the cassette tapes Frank Zataar and I made of their live gigs there.
