Corporate Uncle vs Mark Stewart  Death Wire (Vocal) [Steve Marsh Remix]   Favoriting Death Wire Dub - Steve March Remix  eMERGENCY heARTS  2022  "Mark Stewart, frontman of the highly influential rock outfit the Pop Group, has died at age 62. Stewart’s death was confirmed by his label over the weekend; the singer has reportedly passed away in the early hours of Friday, 21st April. No cause of death was given. //// “Mute is deeply saddened by the loss of our dear friend, fellow agitator and creative force of nature, Mark Stewart,” the label wrote in a statement. “With such a unique interpretation on life, on everything, there really was no one like Mark Stewart. In honour of this original, fearless, sensitive, artistic and funny man, think for yourself and question everything!” “He questioned every single thing that was said,” the statement continued. “And in his political beliefs and in support of others, Mark was not just looking out for the underdog, he was intent that everyone got a voice, everyone got a chance. Oppression is the enemy.” //// Stewart founded the Pop Group in 1977 in Bristol with friends John Waddington and Simon Underwood – Gareth Sager and Bruce Smith soon completed the lineup. The band were heavily influenced by punk but drew from a huge variety of influences, including dub, funk, and jazz. They became pioneers of the post-punk movement, and their album Y, released in 1979, is considered a classic of the genre. //// The band disbanded in 1981 but reformed in 2010 and went on to tour semi-regularly – they released their first album in 35 years in 2015, called Citizen Zombie. Their last album was 2016’s Honeymoon on Mars. //// Stewart would release numerous solo albums across his career – his most recent was the collaborative album Vs, in 2022. He was steadfastly political throughout his career, railing against the evils of capitalism, consumerism, and authoritarianism."    0:00:23 (Pop-up)

Hopefully they would appreciate the dark humour in the fact that they are literally the dead voices on the air here... R.I.P. Mark Stewart & Lee "Scratch" Perry. This track was released March 10, 2023. ""Dead Voices on Air (DVOA) is Mark Spybey's main musical project. It was formed in 1992 when he emigrated to Canada from his native England. Using improvisation and sound layering as a source for their music, DVOA blends processed sound from primitive instruments and toys into rhythmic structures or dark clusters of ambient sound. The result is music for the eyes. This is not ambient chill-out, nor is it music for wallpaper. It is organic, eclectic improvisation, cut up and spat out. Either framed into short pieces of music or rough blocks of noise. Panambience is the term coined that perhaps frames this approach most adequately. //// NOTE: Dead Voices On Air was mostly a solo project of Mark Spybey for a long time, expanding to the band only several times before, but since 2020 it's officially a full band including: Mark Spybey, Lori Cole, Marko Roberti and Anatoly Grinberg."

Much as punk & post-punk has long loved incorporating elements (or the whole) of dub-inspired playing & mixing; industrial music & dub can often be found crossing paths, too. Unlikely bedmates, but unafraid to conjoin. Meat Beat Manifesto is the "Industrial, Electronic, Experimental music act started by John Stephen Corrigan aka Jack Dangers and Jonny Stephens in 1987, Swindon, United Kingdom. Jack Dangers has led the group and been the only permanent member, collaborating with other members along the way. Meat Beat Manifesto worked with Consolidated and The Disposable Heroes Of Hiphoprisy to pioneer the early '90s "industrial hip-hop" sound. Meat Beat Manifesto's earlier work is widely credited with influencing trip hop, drum & bass and big beat."

Einstürzende Neubauten  Schmertzen Hoeren   Favoriting Kollaps  ZickZack  1981  Perhaps what’s most extraordinary about Kollaps is that it was made at all. Aside from those fleeting moments of tenderness, it’s a violent, raging, uncompromising din, made by urban nomads; at least one member was of no fixed abode. “It's not architectural destruction that haunts us,” said Bargeld in 1993, “it's the rift torn in the culture of Europe and especially Germany. The pre-war avant-garde tradition was completely severed. There was no German tradition one could refer to without feeling guilty. That culture which existed before the war is rightly forbidden to us, because of what it led to – or at best, did not prevent. Connect the ‘destructive character’ with this historical perspective and you have a key to our method and madness."    0:14:45 (Pop-up)
Front 242  With Your Cries   Favoriting Geography  New Dance  1982  Electronic body music (acronymized to EBM) is a genre of electronic music that combines elements of industrial music and synth-punk with elements of disco and dance music. It developed in the early 1980s in Western Europe as an outgrowth of both punk and industrial music cultures, the term first coined by Kraftwerk's Ralf Hutter...Front 242 are one of the best examples. Formed in 1981 in Aarschot, near Leuven, Belgium, by Daniel Bressanutti and Dirk Bergen, The "front" part of the name comes from the idea of an organized popular uprising and the fact that the word can be translated in many languages while retaining the same meaning...where the "242" was simply "a good design choice"...    0:17:21 (Pop-up)
Two Lone Swordsmen  Faux   Favoriting From The Double Gone Chapel  Warp Records  2004  Formed by Andrew Weatherall and Keith Tenniswood in 1996,following the dissolution of Weatherall's the Sabres of Paradise, Two Lone Swordsmen released material on the record label Emissions Audio Output, run by Weatherall. However, the small nature of the operation limited the duo's success and they subsequently signed to Warp. Since Weatherall's famed emergence as producer of Primal Scream's Screamadelica, he's had a hand in most areas of production, including a prolific DJ career and frequent remixing and board work for New Order, Saint Etienne, Beth Orton, and others..and here...he went full on Goth. It worked. RIP Weatherall, you are missed.    0:20:02 (Pop-up)
Nitzer Ebb  Let Your Body Learn   Favoriting That Total Age  UMG Recordings  1987  Formed in 1982 in Essex, UK Nitzer Ebb was inspired by the post-punk scene and specifically acts like "Siouxsie and the Banshees, Killing Joke and Bauhaus who were having a big influence on us, in some ways stylistically but also in the energy that they gave". Their debut album That Total Age was released in 1987. Depeche Mode, longtime friends and label mates of the band, invited them to open for the European leg of their successful Music For The Masses Tour in 1987.    0:21:58 (Pop-up)
Revolting Cocks  Attack Ships   Favoriting Big Sexy Land  Wax Trax! Records  1986  Revolting Cocks, also known as RevCo, are an American-Belgian industrial rock band, and sometimes supergroup, that began as a musical side project for Richard23 of Front 242, Luc van Acker, and Al Jourgensen of Ministry. The band's name came from an incident that took place in a Chicago bar; according to van Acker and Jourgensen, the band was trying out "insulting French expressions" on a waiter, ordering something they said meant "revolting cock" which led the waiter to say, "You are revolting cocks!" The album's title is a reference to a strip club in West Berlin. Jourgensen said that the club's large, neon sign was "the biggest capitalistic tease" for citizens in East Germany. The album was recorded in 1985 at ICP Studios in Brussels.    0:24:49 (Pop-up)
Skinny Puppy  Far Too Frail   Favoriting Remission  Nettwork  1984  Canada's Skinny Puppy are among the great innovators of Industrial music, and were initially envisioned as an experimental side-project by cEvin Key (Kevin Crompton) while he was in the new wave band Images in Vogue, Skinny Puppy evolved into a full-time project with the addition of vocalist Nivek Ogre (Kevin Ogilvie). The group's primary aim with the album was to bring attention to the topic of vivisection and other issues regarding animal rights. The album's subject matter also deals with subjects such as chemical warfare, environmental waste, and disease. They are currently on their retirement tour...and played in Toronto last night. It was awesome.    0:28:57 (Pop-up)

Throbbing Gristle  Exotica   Favoriting 20 Jazz Funk Greats  Industrial Records / Mute  1979 / 2017  "Industrial Records is a record label established in 1976 by industrial music group and performance artists Throbbing Gristle. The group created the label primarily for self-releases but also signed several other groups and artists. The label gave a name to the industrial music genre." //// "Martin Denny's "Exotica Vol II" was in the collection of Throbbing Gristle and Psychic TV's Genesis Breyer P-Orridge... Throbbing Gristle was very interested in Martin Denny's music, dedicating "20 Jazz Funk Greats" to Denny and referencing him on the track "Exotica." Throbbing Gristle, and later Psychic TV, played Martin Denny before concerts, and are said to have sampled Denny records throughout their oeuvre." //// "At the bottom of the liner notes for this album (written by Claude Bessy) was a line that read "this album is dedicated to Martin Denny"."    0:47:13 (Pop-up)
Fred Giannelli  Mr. Denny   Favoriting Fred  Waxtrax  1991  A tribute to Martin Denny, the "father of exotica", from an industrial artist on Wax Trax records? Yup. Yup, that happened. Fred Giannelli (born 1960 in Lowell, Massachusetts) is an American electronic musician. He began experimenting with electronics in the 1970s as Turning Shrines. In 1984, Giannelli met Psychic TV's Genesis P. Orridge while the group was in Boston for a gig. This led to Giannelli eventually travelling to London to join the band in 1988, arriving just in time for the acid house craze. He then left Psychic TV for the Plus 8 label, working with Detroit DJ and producer Richie Hawtin as Spawn. Continuing under the Plus 8 label, he formed the Telepathic label for his own industrial/techno recordings as the Acid Didj, Giannelli, Deneuve and Mazdaratti. The 1990s saw him release a number of records, including 1997's Unpopular Science under the alias of the Kooky Scientist. //// Past projects and aliases include the Kooky Scientist, Acid Didj, The Kinky Scientist, Deneuve, The Kranky Scientist, Mazdaratti, PTV, Sickmob, Splerge, Fred vom Jupiter, Fred vs. Fred, Fred Ex, Spawn (with Richie Hawtin and Daniel Bell) and Turning Shrines.    0:50:06 (Pop-up)
Pailhead  I Will Refuse   Favoriting Trait (Deluxe Version)  Cleopatra Records  1998 / 2022  "Pailhead was a short-lived side project of Al Jourgensen of Ministry that featured Dischord Records founder and former Minor Threat frontman Ian MacKaye on vocals. The band's sound was a combination of industrial beats and hardcore punk, presaging what Ministry would later do with Jello Biafra in another side project, Lard. //// While Alain Jourgensen was living in London, he met Ian MacKaye. MacKaye had been in Washington D.C. punk bands The Teen Idles, Minor Threat, Skewbald/Grand Union, Egg Hunt and Embrace and was on the verge of forming Fugazi, while Jourgensen was taking his band Ministry into new territory—away from the more pop sound of With Sympathy and toward the harder sound of The Land of Rape and Honey. The two found common ground both musically and politically and decided to collaborate on a project that would fuse elements of industrial music with hardcore punk. //// Pailhead released the single "I Will Refuse" / "No Bunny" (released in both 7" and 12" formats) in 1987 and the 4-song EP Trait in 1988, both on the Wax Trax! record label." "Trait is the sole extended play by American industrial rock band Pailhead. The original EP was released in 1988, containing the first four songs in a slightly different order. When re-released on CD in the early 1990s, the group's first single ("I Will Refuse" b/w "No Bunny" 12") was added as a bonus. Recent reissues have added another 2 tracks to the release. //// Chris Connelly's first work with Jourgensen was to record vocals for the track that would later emerge as "I Will Refuse." Connelly released this version, which he called "Stick" and attributed to the Revolting Cocks, on his Initials C.C. album. In his memoirs, he says he was not offended when MacKaye rerecorded the vocals with new lyrics, saying "It was an honor to be erased by Ian.""    0:56:16 (Pop-up)
Lard  Forkboy   Favoriting The Last Temptation Of Reid  Alternative Tentacles  1990  Lard is an American hardcore punk/industrial band founded in 1988 as a side project by Jello Biafra (vocals; formerly of Dead Kennedys), Al Jourgensen (guitar; of Ministry), Paul Barker (bass; also of Ministry), and Jeff Ward (drums; once a Ministry touring member). Over the years, several other members of Ministry played with Lard, namely Bill Rieflin, Mike Scaccia, and Rey Washam. //// Like most of Biafra's work, Lard's songs are angrily political (the War on Drugs is a particularly common theme) but often have a tinge of humor. //// Lard has not officially toured and has only performed live a handful of times, mostly around the San Francisco area (where Jello lives and operates his Alternative Tentacles record label). The band played during Ministry's 1988 tour and throughout their 1989–1990 dates, once in Chicago after wrapping the recording of The Last Temptation of Reid, once at the conclusion of a Ministry concert in Los Angeles (March 24, 2003), and at the San Francisco (September 26, 2004), Portland (September 28, 2004) and Seattle (September 29, 2004) dates of Ministry's Evil Doer tour. Because its key members are active with other projects, it is unlikely that the band will tour. //// According to a 2020 interview Jourgensen said that he and Biafra plan to make a brand new Lard album soon with them emailing songs back and forth."    1:00:38 (Pop-up)

D.O.S.E Featuring Mark E. Smith  Plug Myself In (12" 2 Pointblanc Intensive Care Mix)   Favoriting D.O.S.E Featuring Mark E. Smith – Plug Myself In (The Spoonful Of Sugar Mixes)  PWL  1996  Arguably the closest Mark E. Smith got to an industrial mix, therefore I am expected to play it. Technically, the original track was more breakbeat than anything else, but this particular mix has a fair amount of crossover w/ industrial. This was a single that came out prior to the Levitate album, in collaboration with D.O.S.E, the project of Simon Spencer (who also went under the alias Dodo Bassburger.) He collaborated w/ the Fall briefly on 1997's Levitate; originally slated to produce the entirety of the album before falling out with Mark E. Smith and only finishing two. Smith was quick to pen a song titled "Spencer Must Die" for the final product. Tragically Simon Spencer did die, in 2003, "after inhaling his own vomit at the Glastonbury Festival."    1:07:42 (Pop-up)
Pigface  Kiss King (Saint James Mix)   Favoriting Below The Belt  Invisible Records  1998  The project of Martin Atkins, who has enlisted literally hundreds of collaborators to bring this project to fruition. Many Pigface songs start with his work alone, but through the years, Pigface has become a who's who of the industrial world & beyond. This remix is by James Galus, manager for the band Mindless Self Indulgence. The vocals on this track (and the remix) are from Mary Dee Reynolds, who was the frontwoman of Chainsuck. Next time you're in Chicago (if you're not already), don't forget to visit Martin Atkins' Museum of Post Punk & Industrial Music.    1:12:29 (Pop-up)

Waxtrax

1991

A remix of the song that is a tribute to Martin Denny, the "father of exotica" from an industrial artist on Wax Trax records? With a guiro? Yup. Yup, that happened. Listed simply as "Macadamian Mix" on the release, this is a remix of "Mr. Denny". //// On that topic: "Martin Denny (April 10, 1911 РMarch 2, 2005) was an American pianist, composer, and arranger. Known as the "father of exotica," he was a multi-instrumentalist and could play a number of percussion instruments. In a long career that saw him performing up to 3 weeks prior to his death, he toured the world popularizing his brand of lounge music which included exotic percussion, imaginative rearrangements of popular songs, and original songs that celebrated Tiki culture." //// And from the desk of Fred Giannelli in 2005: "LETTER: Date: Mon, 14 Mar 2005 02:40:53 -0500 //// FROM: FRED //// TO: THE MEMBERS OF THROBBING GRISTLE //// I'm sure you all have heard of Mr. Martin Denny's recent passing. I just thought I would retell the story that I documented on my Wax Trax CD for you all since you all were the reason he wrote to me. //// MR. DENNY(MACADAMIAN MIX) //// (Unbeknownst to me, in 1989, Genesis P-Orridge sent a record I made with his daugher Caresse P-Orridge called, "R.U. Xperienced?" to Mr. Martin Denny. This is what happened.) //// Attached is a foto of what he sent me which reads as follows: August 1, 1989 Turning Shrines P.O.Box 337 Boston, MA 02180 //// Dear Sirs, Just recently I received a LP addressed to me from Brighton England entitled "R.U. Xperienced?" I am curious as to who may have sent it to me. Is it for real or a put on ? I have not been able to detirmine (sic) which. It's so far out and I'm inclined to think someone was on a heavy trip when it was recorded. //// A few years ago I received another LP made in England titled "Throbbing Gristle's" Greatest Hits. It was put out by Industrial Record's, London. At the bottom of the liner notes written by a Claude Bessy was a line that read "this album is dedicated to Martin Denny". Have you ever heard of this record? At the bottom of the LP jacket cover the slogan read: Entertainment through Pain" . There is a reference to a P Orridge which is also mentioned in the R.U. Xperienced LP. //// Could you clear up this mystery to me. I do have a sense of humor. However both these recordings leaves me incredulous that someone would go to the expense of producing both of these records or is it intended to be a shocker? //// I would appreciate a reply. Sincerely, Martin Denny //// Included was a photocopy of the back of the TG greatest hits sleeve. //// So about a year later I was working on my solo Wax Trax project and I called Mr. Denny and I tell him I received his letter and I'm getting back to him and he replies, " It took you a year to respond to me !!!!" I excused myself and explained that I had been on tour a lot and living in England and that I'm working on a song about this now and that I was taping the conversation, (which I don't think really registered with him). So we began talking about Throbbing Gristle and we had a funny, pleasant chat which I sampled quite a bit of and used on my song. He provided such concise sound bites. //// He did have a funny anecdote about when he started his career people in LA were making fun of his records and one time he heard a radio dj announce that he had a new record by Martin Denny and he played this horribly out of tune piss take on him. So he went out looking for the actual record and he found it and the cover was a close up of 2 hands on a piano keyboard. But if you looked closely, they were 2 left hands.//// When my Fred CD came out I sent him a copy but I never heard back from him. Maybe he didn't have a CD player ? //// telepathic regards, Ĩed"

The Shadows  Kon-Tiki   Favoriting Kon-Tiki 7"  Columbia  1961  The Shadows (originally known as the Drifters) were an English instrumental rock group, who dominated the British popular music charts in the late 1950s and early 1960s, in the pre-Beatles era. They served as the backing band for Cliff Richard from 1958 to 1968, and have joined him for several reunion tours. The Shadows have had 69 UK chart singles from the 1950s to the 2000s, 35 credited to the Shadows and 34 to Cliff Richard and the Shadows. The group, who were in the forefront of the UK beat-group boom, were the first backing band to emerge as stars.    1:38:50 (Pop-up)
La Máquina Del Sonido  Fuego   Favoriting Fuego / In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida 7"  CBS  1969  The brainchild of Ernesto De Léon not much is known about this Mexican garage rock outfit. This is a cover of 'Fire" originally written by Arthur Brown, Vincent Crane, Mike Finesilver and Peter Ker in 1968. The song's lyrics are sung from the perspective of a self-proclaimed "god of Hellfire," destroying, with tremendous glee, everything that his victims have built up over their lives. This version slaps even hard than the original, some would say! Perfect for enjoying a flaming volcano tiki cocktail!    1:40:46 (Pop-up)
Meridian Brothers  Cumbia Del Pichamán   Favoriting Cumbia Siglio XXI  Bongo Joe  2020  Columbia's Meridian Brothers are always pushing boundaries of Cumbia..on this album using electronic and modern instrumentation and interpretation...and this version of "Son of a Preacher Man" is delightfully woozy. Yma Sumac  Taki-Rari   Favoriting Mambo!  Capitol Records  1954  One of the greatest voices of the 20th century, Yma Sumac eschewed traditional opera to create absolutely SLAMMING performances of exotica...for which she was named as "The Queen of Exotica" Sumac could emit notes from above a coloratura soprano to the low notes of a bass and had one of the widest vocal ranges. She was able to emit notes from the tessitura of sopranino, soprano, mezzo-soprano, contralto, tenor, baritone and bass, and was the only person able to do the triple coloratura or the trill of the birds. Her singing voice ranged from B2 to G♯7.    1:46:58 (Pop-up)
Harry Belafonte  Coconut Woman   Favoriting Belafonte Sings of The Caribbean  Sony Music  1957  From the Queen of Exotica, we go to the King of Calypso...He earned his career breakthrough with the album Calypso (1956), which was the first million-selling LP by a single artist and is one of the few performers to win an Oscar, a Grammy, and Emmy and a Tony award. Born in New York to Jamaican parents, he not ony was a musician but a human rights activist, working side by side with MLK and supporting his family. His legacy will live on forever, and he will be sadly missed. Belafonte passed away April 25th at the age of 96.    1:48:46 (Pop-up)

Hi, DJ Babs & Derek!

I should be kicking myself for missing out on the start of this! Industrial was all I was listening to thoughout the 90's & the early 00's. I'm well acquainted with all the acts you've played tonight so far, sio this for me is a thrilling flashback to a time when I sauntered throough cutout bins at local independent record shops for eerything & anything industrial. Still have a bunch of Wax Trax, Invisible, Metropolis & Cleopatra material lying round in one corner of my bedroom and in the basement.

Ultra, according to Brix E Smith... "I believe that Mark is a psychic. He’s written songs about things that came to pass later. I'm quite a spiritual person. I also believe that I’m a psychic. I believe that he and I connect on multi levels. I believe that everything is vibrational based. We could talk about that all day. I hear things in my head. I’m not nuts. Maybe I am nuts. (Laughs). Where does inspiration come from? You tell me. I hear in my head this song is called ‘Terry Waite Sez’. I hand the song to Mark. I tell him it HAS to be called ‘Terry Waite Sez’. At this point Terry Waite was the envoy to the Archbishop of Canterbury. We record the song. He ends up getting kidnapped. The song is released. Then his family call Beggars Banquet record company. They believe there might be clues in the lyrics as to where he’s being held. That was one instance but there were many more."
