A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Hey Trouble and you makers of it.
Don’t think you ever miss, ms. T, with setting such an incredible vibe. Especially on the majority of what seem to be incredibly consistent grey Thursdays.
Really lovely set today.
Got the tall black coffee and smoothie, and drum pad in front of me.
On Friday went up the street for a hair cut. Had JA’s show on, which was all Ahmad Jamal, and on came Poinciana - and I stopped dead in my tracks at the groove. Been obsessed with it ever since, trying to get it down. Beautiful tune, with an incredible N’awlins groove that is my favorite type of playing.
Mind-blower was finding out that a good friend (and great singer) is dating his daughter and had been spending lots of time at his home with him.
Life keeps opening up in ways that are beautiful.
Rest in Power, the great Harry Belafonte (right on, TDK)!

I had a "saxophone lesson" with Bennie Maupin in LA about 10 years ago. In quotes because we didn't really work on anything saxophone tech-wise. I just hung out and asked him questions (especially about his pedal rig!) and heard some stories. I am in awe that I got to experience that.

For the folks unfamiliar with Harry’s fierce and fearless criticism of American political intransigence, this clip is a must-see:
www.c-span.org...
Speaking at a poverty conference in the South in 2005 he completely eviscerates the Democrats of the day, which included onstage that day seated to either side of him Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, for ushering voters into a “burning house” that MLK, his close friend and confidante, spoke of.
Belafonte’s mentor Paul Robeson (and by extension WEB DuBois) both advocated in their days for a viable and committed socialist third party.
It’s an incredible clip. We love him always for pulling no punches.

I quit seven years ago this month. Hardest thing I have done. I used Chantix, and I guess it must have helped. Took it for about six months, I think? Eventually figured I'd better see what the new normal was going to be like.

You can do it.

Handy, you used to smoke? Thankfully, that is one vice I seem immune to. The only time I smoked was about 1 pack a day for the last 6 weeks of getting my final degree -- to get me through finals -- and then I literally was able to put it down. I strongly suspect it's genetic; my late Mom was able to quit absolutely cold turkey, no taper no problem, when I was 2 and my uncle simply said "why are you kililng yourself?" This was back when you could buy cigs from vending machines at McDonalds.

i once wrote a 55 page footnote...
it was too long, so i published it as an an article, then cited the article in the footnote that it was originally written for.
