Favoriting Hinky Dinky Time with Uncle Michael: Playlist from May 12, 2023 Favoriting

Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

In the late 1970s film maker Les Blank spent a week at the University of Kansas. The student union movie theater had great movies seven nights a week for many years. Les showed his films there four nights in a row. We went two of those nights. Those nights he showed his films with several Arhoolie recording artists. That same weekend he showed some of these films at the auditorium at the Topeka public library. I attended that showing, too. Les drew really good crowds.

Down Home Music was the VERY BEST mail order catalog, also. I started ordering records from Down Home around 1980. They carried all the great reissue labels. @Dean--I just finished Chapter 35 in Moby Dick, about the Mast Head, and it is so beautiful as it evolves at the end to be about the spirit of life, pantheism, the sky, the ocean

Whenever I think of Flaco Jimenez, I think of "King of the Hill" where this character Octavio is on a pirate radio and he's stealing music from another station and passing it off as his broadcast. It was a Flaco Jimenez song.

@Marie in Queens: I read that one not too long ago. My reading has stalled lately for various reasons, one of which, as I mentioned, is that I'm all for savoring the prose.

I always found it interesting that The Beatles released The Sundown Playboys on Apple Records. If Apple was around longer, I think they would have signed other regional acts from the SE USA.

I saw The Klezmorim back in 1976 in front of a very enthusiastic crowd at a big outdoor festival. They were all in orthodox gear, and above the massive applause they raised their brass and reed instruments victoriously at the sky and the head guy exclaimed, "It's true what they say, the Jews have horns!"

For years there was a DJ who played only hard core Norteño music during the early morning hours on an AM radio station in Mexico at 800 on the dial. It was all in Spanish and I could only pick out a few words. During the 1980s and 1990s I would often listen between 6:00 am and 7:00 am in my car on my way to work. Yes, my friends, you can really rock out on the accordion! Even at that ungodly hour.

As an aside, a guy I know from my local Trader Joe's mentioned that he was reading the Leon Russell book a week or so ago. I referred him to the HDT LR show, and he is now making his way through it in the archives. Loving it.

PS: I really like the photo of Strachwitz that you chose. In contrast to many of the memorial photos I've seen, it shows him aged significantly but also we can see the sparks of the fire of joy that he got from music and the musicians. Thanks again.
