Albert Ayler published an essay in The Cricket, Amiri Baraka’s short-lived Black Arts magazine, recounting various mystical visions, including a widely reported UFO incident in Ohio in 1966 that the Ayler brothers had witnessed and later inspired Close Ecounters of the Third Kind

Woah...are you telling me it was Ayler's accounting specifically that inspired Close Encounters? Or just that same incident in Ohio inspired the film?

This comes from an essay Escaping from Notes to Sounds by Andrew Katzentain in May 11, NYRB
I had the same question. I cant tell if the author is saying it was specifically Ayler brothers account or an event witnessed by others as well.

Not exactly sure, but basically you register to agree to run your laptop/desktop/whatever on the network, so that during your downtime it's crunching numbers. (Kind of like crypto, I guess, even though SETI predates that trend?)

I am going to choose to believe it was the Ayler accounting that somehow inspired Paul Schrader to write the first draft of the Close Encounters script.

Irian Jaya. When I worked for a big-time law firm in LA, late '80s, I was also attending UCLA. One of the younger attorneys asked if I would mind checking out a book about Irian Jaya from the campus library, because he was planning to visit on vacation. I was happy to do so. The book consisted of photographs chosen to depict how the island had insidiously been infiltrated by Western cultural detritus: motorcycles, Coca Cola, and so forth.

There is no escape from the USA.

The main reason why Indonesia has been so keen to keep it is b/c, you guessed it, oil (and it's a nice geopolitical location as well). It's been a low-insensity insurrection. Indonesia and the oil companies mostly just command the cities and the oil fields. The hinterlands are much like the other half of the island.

Just checking back in. That sucks Wenzo. You rode it across the country??
  11:18pm
wenzo:

No, I was typing hastily. I rode it from Richmond VA to New Orleans… technically Bay St. Louis Mississippi actually. I met an academy award nominated costume designer I the parking lot of a Chinese restaurant and she drove me the last few miles. I arrived on Halloween and while sitting in a crowded cafe a woman came in & announced that her daughter had bought a ticket to voodoo fest & was sick… nobody said anything so I took it, ended up seeing George Clinton & the P-Funk Allstars and KISS lol. Lot of pyrotechnics.

We've had several bikes stolen around here. Best one, my son's friend was sitting inside playing video games on his computer at the front window. Some kid walked up to the open garage and took his bike, literally 10 feet from him while he watched.
  11:34pm
wenzo:

Thanks TGravel… yea. I’m finding it hard to relate to people right now cause not everyone gets how infuriating this is. The bike mechanics get it. They’re like “oh yea if we see them we’ll tackle them off the bike no problem.” Lol. I honestly feel like I would be a lot less upset if my car was stolen… I haven’t had it long, not really digging the whole spending obscene amounts of money on insurance thing anyway… also y’know. The police might actually care about a stolen car.

I got tackled off my bike one time… or shoved or punched not really sure. Then basically kicked the shit out of. I feel like they mostly just wanted to beat on me for the hell of it. Teenagers… whaddayagonnado. Then they robbed me as an afterthought. Committed several felonies for $17. Didn’t take my wallet, phone, or most importantly bike… did fuck up my jaw and traumatize me but hey. Minor victories.
  11:37pm
Dean:

"The police might actually care about a stolen car."

The police don't care. They have the most miserable job in the world. That's partially our fault.
