Irene, it depends on the size of the sandwich. This one could have fit in a studio, but the potato salad meant it needed a one bedroom. Kind of a home office situation. (Colloquially, to house is to eat rapidly and in full.)

Sean, I agree, with some reservations. I've been riding in New York for 20+ years now, for most of that as my all but exclusive mode of transit, and I've never seen it this nuts. Hence the ferry.

ngh, agree, at least drivers are aware that bikes exist here. Well, some of them.

As a pedestrian, I stand for my rights against cyclists (had someone beat me up for refusing to get out his way on the sidewalk, and b/c I had the temerity to tell him bikes don't belong on the sidewalk. Even after he punched me a few times, I still refused to get out of the way. When I'm on a bike, I obey all cyclist laws (it makes your behavior more predictable, and therefore, safer), and affirm my right to cycle.

Totally agree with that ngh. I've had several testy altercations with other cyclists in London in recent years because I want to obey the rules, and they don't. Black London cabs always used to be the traditional source of grief, but most of them are fine now, they've accepted the shared road use. Lots of cyclists act like real prats, sadly. Seem to think they're riding the Giro instead of commuting across Waterloo.

I wish some of the cyclists in NYC would obey the traffic laws. They all look at you with contempt if you yell at them for blowing through the traffic lights and nearly hitting pedestrians (like myself). It's their sense of entitlement that gets my angry.

We were planning on seeing Some Like It Hot. We wound up seeing the second half of Some Like It Hot (got there about an hour late, sat not moving trying to get into the Lincoln Tunnel). It is a very fun, silly show, and we enjoyed the 1.5 hours of it we did catch (the plot is very basic, took 5 minutes to know what's going on). Nothing essential, but great dancing, singing, choreography, performances.

I bike locally in Central Joisey, not in Manhattan, usually train or drive in. When I'm driving in, though, I'm horrified by the "safe" bike lanes. I know the idea was to protect bikers, but you can't see them coming, and they zip to your left when you need to make a left turn (I understand accidents have actually increased). Not to mention the motorized bikes speeding along at ridiculous high speeds, and it's a bit of a nightmare.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:02pm
David (in London):

Being at times also both a pedestrian and a driver, I still can't quite fathom the psychology people have in their heads on bikes sometimes. I said to one guy 'You wouldn't drive across a red light, or step on foot into traffic if the lights were against you. Why do you do it on a bike then?' He didn't really have an answer and just told me to fuck off. Groucho Marx he wasn't...

Here's my gripe on cyclist, can we stop cycling two abreast with your super hot gear advertising your club!! I cycle constantly and try and keep to to the left hand side of the kerb. Nothing more annoying than a group of keen folks burning off calories and holding me up!! Sorry to pontificate!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm
adamdoesit:

Ah well. When you're on a bike in a city, people hate you. Roll the light through an empty intersection, and they yell at you. Stop at the light, they yell at you anyway, then honk at you to get out of the way when the light changes. Ride in the bike lane, sorry, that's where cops park. Ride in the street, they run you down, left hook you, door you, and so on. I know this a little too intimately. This is what it is to be the visible, vulnerable Other. Maybe it makes it easier to ignore the deaths by car that come day, after day, after day.

The reason I took the ferry today was because I didn't want to deal with the often life-threatening aggression I receive just riding a bike, not very fast, and with a care for others, to work and then back home. I'm dismayed to find that aggression reflected here. I think it's probably best that I step away.

Not from me, I really like and admire bikers. My beef is with the current set up in NYC-I really don't want to accidentally hit anyone while driving, and the lane set up is soooooo bad. I find I just can't see those bikers on my left. I'm sure I'd be biking NYC if I lived there, but the set up...
