A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

Hopefully we won't have any connection issues. As I tried to log in, BUTT gave me some static. I'm gonna have to do some troubleshooting if this keeps up...
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:11pm
Austin Rich:

"The Frontier Gentleman" was part of a genre of radio serials: The Adult Western. Gritty stories, with danger and risk. Blood, shootouts... etc. Since a lot of westerns had been family and or kids shows up until this point, the "Adult Westerns" were a way to get men to listen to more radio.

While The Frontier Gentleman is an interesting cat, and certainly kind and considerate for the most part, we only get snippets of his backstory. I haven't listened to this series all the way through, so I'm sure what all we learn... but what we learn, we learn very slowly... and through his actions, mostly.

↳ Song: "The One That Got Away" by "Tom Waits"
This is one of my fave Tom Waits albums, and it was one of the first ones that I found on vinyl, in the wild. In fact: I found two Waits records that day, for a steal. I think some junkie needed a quick fix, and I stumbled on the records he sold. Score!

Jandek is a reclusive musician, who recorded music for decades before he played his first show in front of an audience. I've seen him twice, in two different parts of the country. The shows are pretty strange, but... well... he's a pretty strange dude, from what I gather.

I know what you mean about 70's Tom Waits. His later albums are VERY good, and his early albums sort of meander. But there's a few gems here and there, and I think if you play the tunes here and there divorced from the album, they stand out.

First heard People Like Us as a DJ on WZRD. I don't remember what CD it was. It was nice discovering this stuff as I aired it on the radio. The shifts were very long sometimes, lots of gaps in the schedule. I have done radio that was ten hours long several times. It was nice to discover plunderphonics and sound collage as I was doing an improvised sound collage in real time on the radio, sometimes.

↳ Song: "Last Chance" by "The Wipers"
I'm a big Wipers fan, and this is a underrated 90's album that doesn't get as much love as I think it should. In the early 90's, when Nirvana was covering them, Greg Sage from the Wipers was offered a new record deal, to try and capitalize on Nirvana's fame. The Wipers released a very mellow, non-rock, non-grunge album - Silver Sail - which bombed, on the radio, and critically. Then they waited a bit, and put out this album, which is really rockin', and super-great... and almost no one heard it.
