Favoriting Hinky Dinky Time with Uncle Michael: Playlist from May 26, 2023 Favoriting

Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Hi Uncle Michael. For the rarely-heard perspective of a female touring musician, singing to someone she’s gotta leave behind, I recommend “The Show is Over” by the great Evelyn “Champagne” King.

For me, the answer was 'Rock On'. It just seemed musically uninteresting, like an actor putting out a pop song, or something inexplicable. That was my response to seeing him on Midnight Special or Don Kirshner's Rock Concert on TV, (can't remember which). I remember relegating it to Gary Glitter Rock and Roll territory, which must have been contemporary. In short, I just didn't get it. Maybe it just made more sense in the UK teen pop scene than it did in North Am

Fun fact - when the replacements played this song live on some tv awards show, the network insisted they not say “feeling good from the pills we took,” so they didn’t. They replaced the refrain with “it’s too late to take pills, here we go” which is treated several times. It was great

I know that I have heard the Richard Marx cover of Rock On more than once because it took a number of times for me to remember that I heard it. It just does not have the same sound as the David Essex one. If anyone has to cover Rock On, they should take it further into where David Essex had it--not make it sounds like a generic rock song.
