Invented in 1982 by Klaus Joort, the "jort" is a portmanteau of "jean" and "short." Typically these are blue jeans that have been cut off, often haphazardly. The hazards, of course, are obvious. I prefer to call them "jorts" instead of "joorts" even though the joort snobs are out there, and they will find you.

the text has been in circulation since about 350 CE, and i translated a 1986 critical edition of it. the editor of that volume was able to collate most of the oldest surviving editions of it.

@orthoF: i speak mandarin, and read both modern and classical chinese (the text i'm working on is in classical, aka "literary sinitic"). first year mandarin (at a reputable university) is a 6 credit hour course. native english speaker. i started learning chinese when i was 21.

DLI knows their stuff, so I guess that's right. But I also took a semester of Hebrew, and it seemed about as hard as Russian (less vocabulary in commong with English, but easier grammar than Russian--at least at the level I studied. I would guess I'd judge Arabic to be as hard as Hebrew. I'm not intmidated by the different writing systems, except the east Asion Chinese-ish ones where have to memorize a gazillion characters.

Ha! I did actually try to start a band once. None of us knew how to play any instruments and I can't sing but, we were going to be called "Bat Lashes" ("all girl") (actually, "All Girl" would be a good band name... (this was long b4 there was this kinda famous pop singer/band Batlashes)

I was just tryin' to be clever. Learning any foreign language as an adult is difficult. I think the Arabic course was longer because 5 weeks were spent on Egyptian dialect.
