Hi kids! Just about to get rolling here. Since there was too much info to convey in this short 1 hour show, I'm going to post what I couldn't cover here in the comments. Hope you dig tonight's episode!

Vanilla Fudge started life back in 1965 as The Pigeons. After being impressed by local sensations The Young Rascals, organist Mark Stein and bassist Tim Bogert decided to form a band in a similar vein. They recruited guitarist Vince Martell, and later drummer Carmine Appice and started playing the local clubs on Long Island and in NYC.

In early 1967, Atlantic Records was interested in signing them to a deal. But there was a catch; they needed a new name. Atlantic didn’t care for The Pigeons, and neither did some of the band members. After deliberating on some names, a young woman who worked at the Page 2 club on Long Island suggested the name β€œVanilla Fudge” as it was the nickname her grandfather had for her as a child, and because it described they’re sound, β€œyou’re like white soul music”. The band liked it, and so did Atlantic Records. The rest is history.

The band made five albums for Atlantic from β€˜67-’69; their sound getting heavier as the decade wore on. After meeting Jeff Beck, the rhythm section of Bogert and Appice made tentative plans to form a new band with Beck, but plans were derailed when Beck was in a severe auto accident which would require months of recovery. Bogert and Appice still wound up leaving in 1970 to form Cactus with Amboy Dukes singer Rusty Day and Detroit Wheels guitarist Jim McCarty. Cactus released three records with this line-up, and a fourth with Day and McCarty replaced.

Mark Stein and Vince Martell tried to keep the band going after Bogert and Appice’s departure replacing them with Sal D’Nofrio and Jim Galluzi, but to know avail. The band ended in 1970 and Mark Stein wound up forming Boomerang with Galluzi. They recorded one album for RCA Victor and called it a day.

In 1972, both Cactus and the Jeff Beck Group (which Beck formed after he recovered from his injuries) folded. Since all three of Beck, Bogert, and Appice were now free from other commitments, they made good on the plans they made in β€˜69 and formed Beck, Bogert, & Appice. The trio recorded one album for Epic in 1973 and called it quits.

Awesome! My dad had that one when I was growing up, so I've been familiar with it forever. But when I really sat down and listened to it, I was blown away by what they were doing in '67. So heavy and proggy, yet soulful and psychedelic as well. As I said in the break, LANDMARK ALBUM.

Tim doesn't really get his due as a bassist. He's a monster, and quite virtuostic. I can't think of another bassist that sounds like him. There's a definite soul/r&b influence to his playing, but he takes it in a completely different direction.

All four members kept busy through the 70s (especially Appice who wound up playing with Rod Stewart). In 1982, the band reunited to support a β€œbest of” collection released by Atlantic Records. The band has been active both recording and performing since then, though not always with all four original members. Tim Bogert had to retire from performing in 2009 due to health issues. He was permanently replaced by New Jersey native Pete Bremy who remains with the band to this day. Unfortunately, Bogert passed away on January 13th, 2021.

Honest question: is one hour not enough time to do these type of spotlight shows? I enjoyed doing it, but felt as though I wasn't really able to explore the music as much as i would like to. If you enjoyed it, I'll probably keep at it. But if you felt it to be lacking in depth, I might reconsider.

BTW, in these times where taking a popular song and slowing it down or changing the mood is sort of the de facto way of interpreting other people's material, these guys were doing it WAY more effectively 50 years ago. I think their version of "Hanging" coveys the feeling of unrequited love, longing, and heartbreak even better than the original. Of course, that's not to say the original isn't amazing, but this captures the sentiment a bit better. Nowadays artists just slow songs down for little reason, IMO.
