@Gerry from Miami (formerly from LA): I lived there for forty years, give or take. I remember attending two performances by Piccolo Teatro di Milano of Shakespeare's The Tempest in Italian, Il Tempeto, during the '84 Olympic Arts Festival. Offhand, I can't recall ever hearing a concert there, though for some reason I'm thinking Kipper Kids performed there, but that doesn't seem right.

Hey, then there's Van Morrison, Eric Clapton, Roger Waters-sometimes it's hard to separate the music and the man, but musicians aren't necessarily smart political thinkers.

Yeah that can be tough, some things I can compartmentalize, others I can't. No logic to it.

BOB, they were truly memorable. Got to go backstage to the artists' dressing room and meet Cecil Taylor(only because I was with a friend, jazz superstar flutist, James Newton). Hung out, but didn't get in to meet Van Morrison, but did meet keyboardist Garth Hudson of the Band. Sorry for all the name-dropping. Was just on a lucky streak back then in the 70s.

I *think* I am pretty consistent about compartmentalizing. I bet there are counter-examples that I defensively refuse to acknowledge, but for the most part I don't care about artists' ideological skews. In fact, I rather welcome outlier expression--say, Waters'--because the wider cultural responses it triggers have as much to teach me as the individual's remarks themselves.

That's a great idea-there's always talk about filibuster reform...it should be a requirement that Senators sing for the entire filibuster! (then again, it might be painful to listen to, but that could end them sooner. Just a thought...)
  12:32pm
Dean:

Okay, one counter-example just occurred to me: Frank Sinatra. I've never quite taken to his singing, and so it helps that I also think he was a jerk. But that behavioral/ideological aspect really is second-order. If I enjoyed his singing, I'd overlook his chauvinism.

My mom couldn't stand Johnnie Ray back in the 50s. Too facially and physically expressive, she said. Likewise for Nat "King" Cole. She loved his voice, but couldn't take the strong, exaggerated facial movemenrs he employed while singing at the piano. To each his own!

I can't exactly pin down what fails to grab me re: Sinatra. Mostly, vaguely, I just can't imagine wanting to hear a full side of any of his albums. But then compare Tony Bennett or Johnny Mathis, whom I enjoy. And yes, Ella. Early on I was not an Ella fan, either, but my tune has changed. She can be mesmerizing.
