The Radio Is Broken is a three-hour spelunk through the canyons and fissures of humanity's collective unconscious. It sounds as if a field recording of the Culture Industry were a sonic juggernaut barreling down a rickety track—except that tunnel ahead is just painted onto a sheer cliff wall. With occasional forays into what might pass for "normal" music. Prerequisite journey: Cratedigger's Lung

Hi to y'all grasping onto this broken radio thing.

Schlepping by to bring this to your attention: a GoFundMe to help out our WFMU playlist pal northguineahills through a tough time. Some of you may have already read about it and helped out. Some not, here it is.

No pressure on anyone. It's hard all over -- crapitalism takes no prisoners, that's for sure. But if you have a little that you can spare to help out a WFMU friend, I thought I'd pass along the opportunity:

just getting to a cafe for a few hours once a week is a good reset for my mental health. I rarely get outside and talk people outside of the shelter. (there is nothing any either direction but skid row or (soon to be developed) wilderness for a good 5km in any direction. no stores, no cafes, no anything... downtown isn't too bad, but it's full of tourists and dumb young people. (as opposed to the darkwave cafe i've been frequenting...)

most of the people that end up living here full time (i'm the only person not on staff w/ their own room, others only live here for 6 months if they aren't in the rehab program) are former crack, fentanyl, etc addicts, and lack many life skills. so, there are no kitchenettes. Kinda. I think she's always been pretty wacky but people made her out to be trumpy, etc. but I don't think that's accurate. Not sure. I think she's anti-vax though, FWIW.

Psychic DJ shit is real. Weirdest encounter I ever had with it was Mary Wing playing an obscure selection from the Mary Poppins soundtrack (the one where the kids sing about the kind of nanny they want) two days after it had entered my head for the first time in decades

I still have a cassette of The Supersonic Storybook. I had a chat with Ed once outside the venue I worked at after one of their shows, he was pleasant enough and offered me a ride home, which I had the wisdom to decline

One of my radio mentors used to call it The Radio Gods, where you accidentally play some random thing under pressure and it goes perfectly with what's already playing, etc. Just unexplainable miraculous radio happenings.

I'm pretty ambivalent about it...I remember the creator making this head scratcher of a statement about how they're superior to Billions because they don't revel in the material fetishism as much...

Though now that I know Giuliani was turned on by the wife in Billions that show is burned for me...

There's not a lot of wallowing in material fetishism but it's worst elements are probably intentional; everyone who's a sub-billionaire is a faceless drone to be abused and used, everything with done by the main characters is a business deal. I suppose it confirms dark suspicions we have about the uber wealthy. It's also pretty well written and they managed to wrap it up in a pretty (for me anyway) satisfying manner.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34pm
Rich in Washington:

BTW: the John Lydon doc The Public Image Is Rotten was pretty good, even if it does completely ignore his pro-trump statements, etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34pm
ultradamno:

I think Billions is any worse about it though, is the head scratcher. It's the same dynamic. These are characters who define success that way, who aren't great, so that gets depicted... I don't know if I was so in love with the writing...especially Roman. I guess you're supposed to want to throttle him...but still

That's fascinating. This sentence is a bit of a giveaway: "Lydon, once better known for sending chills down the spine of middle Englanders, now appears adept at sending them to the chiller cabinet." Rotten/Lydon and the Pistols really mattered very little to "middle Englanders." But the media certainly wanted to report otherwise, because that sells papers. And evidently it also sells butter.

Reminds me of when people were jumping on Iggy for the cruise line using Lust For Life. Some musician/producer who was close to him upbraided everyone saying Iggy's been destitute for most of his career up til then.
