"Billion Oyster Project is a New York City-based nonprofit organization with the goal of engaging one million people in the effort to restore one billion oysters to New York Harbor by 2035. Because oysters are filter feeders, they serve as a natural water filter, with a number of beneficial effects for the ecosystem:

Just wanna say, humans are animals that have and can be part of the ecosystems of the world. The places today with the most biodiversity are stewarded by indigenous peoples who work with the land. The idea that humans are separate from nature is called western esotercism, and it's a really counter historical and destructive idea

Unfortunately, most of the indigenous people were eliminated by the ancestors of the people who ate all the oysters.

Jill Lepore wrote a sobering overview of humans deforestation of the world in a recent issue of the New Yorker. Without getting high and mighty, she breaks it down to the self interest of ALL primates since they first fell out of trees and started gathering branches to build huts. Take it from there and weep.
