Charles Mingus said jazz was a word invented to separate musicians from their money. Music for a Free World brings us together, drawing listeners to the healing power of smooth free jazz. Each week, surprise guests bring their own sides to spin and their instruments of choice to spontaneously jam.

Yep. You can also see what an exceptional technician Parton is. Soulful and always the right note at the right time. And what writing! One of the best singer songwriters America has produced. Nina Simone's take on "Pirate Jenny" is unsurpassed. I grew up on the Judy Collins version, good too, but not nearly as dramatically powerful as Nina's.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:49pm
Dave Sewelson:

↳ Gerry from Miami @2:48
talk about it Gerry....
  2:51pm
Tracie:

I think Nina Simone *truly* loved musical theater but because of the racism of the theater world and her unflinching politics, she never did a mainstream show but still. I've heard a few renditions including from the perspective of an Irish (Irish-American?) maid. Stunning, but NS is well, the *one*!

And of course I eternally adore the elfin giant Prince. The royal bad one as we know from this song! Lordy.

Yes. This is *the* Michael Jackson! I think he's singing in his natural voice, w/o his legendary falsetto. I got stories about MJ's natural voice but for another time...I mean, he had a voice more like this one when he was a kid! I wish he'd recorded more songs with his adult voice. He's got a great tenor/low-tenor as well as his falsetto.

Yep. Had to bring that song out from the crates. It really changed the game. The GOAT, for me, will always be Rakim who shifted so much with his internal rhyme and imagery but before him, the Message hipped people to what Hip Hop could do as social messaging.
