The first 100,000 shoppers will receive a free flyer listing all the specials selected specially for the first 100,000 shoppers to purchase.

We sang Laughter in the Rain in junior high choir. Very bizarre for youngsters.

This feels very surreal but also like what my grandmother uses her television for

Lots o' 1974 hits.

↳ Song: "Kmart May 1988 Reel to Reel" by "Tape-A-Thon"
Tape-Athon is new to me. Ironically, "after my time" rather than before my time. Hah!

Attention K-Mart shoppers!

Spent a good deal of my childhood being dragged thru these polyester aisles by Mama Fab.

The oldest Tape-a-Thon media online is from Dec '74.

At the time, I never gave any thought to the music, but now I find it quite lovely.

We had a Kmart I have vague memories of existing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33pm
Krys O.:

We had Caldor's and Korvette's in my hometown in Westchester County, NY in the 60s and 70s.

Caldor's was the "Bloomingdale's of discounting"

Seems that Tape-Athon was around since the 50s.

looks like Caldor had 145 stores, and 22,000 employees. How do these places go out of business? Like K-mart, who are almost extinct now, but used to be all over.
Avatar 1:41pm
Miss Mei:

I got a leather jacket from Kmart that I gave to my GF. I miss Kmart, it was the place to be

Lots of Tape-Athon ephemera via a recorded sound museum:

Surprised I didn't become aware of them during my 1970s life in radio and retail music biz.

That announcer sounded like some random guy. Like, they grabbed the security guard and said, "Here, read this."

Quick listen to theme of "Summer of '42" theme (by Michel Legrand) and think I'm wrong. But there was some well known theme floating in there for a bit.

So the best time to go shopping would have been the end of the month, when the tape was all warped from constant play and sounding kinda trippy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:14pm
Krys O.:

When I was a bank teller in college during the early 80s, we had Muzak throughout our workday. The tempo started slowly during the morning and increased through the afternoon. It was the aural equivalent of No-Doz.

I do miss the 80s piped-in sounds. Today in the shops it's just top40 and throwbacks. Reminds me listening to this to read Joseph Lanza's Elevator Music book again.

I believe I first heard about that book in a "Twin Peaks" fanzine.

Why they were reviewing it, I dunno, but seems appropriate for a book with "Surreal" in the sub-title.
