A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

The Apollo 11 Mission took place between July 16–24, 1969. During the month of July, I like to listen to Apollo 11 Mission tapes.

The backing music is a series of samples, mashed-up, mangled, re-mixed, and played back for you using various devices and controllers.

I was just reading about the Russian Zond 5 mission, which sent 2 turtles and a few other creatures around the moon in September 1968. As a joke, they relayed radio signals that made it seem like Russians had landed, beating Apollo by a few months! en.wikipedia.org...

Space is the place, if you don't have needs like oxygen based air or temperature regulated so the H2O is liquid or pressure within ⨦1 atmosphere. Otherwise, yeah cool.

Nice! I should look into that. Some of those Russian missions were super kooky. I loved that space station they built with the cannon mounted on it.

I think AI Robot is helping Mike Rogers present his Ono film so we have some futuristic nostalgia.

I like that they landed on the earth and not in the water. That's trickier!
Gagarin missed the landing target: A farmer and her granddaughter, Rita Nurskanova, observed the strange scene of a figure in a bright orange suit with a large white helmet landing near them by parachute. Gagarin later recalled, "When they saw me in my space suit and the parachute dragging alongside as I walked, they started to back away in fear. I told them, don't be afraid, I am a Soviet citizen like you, who has descended from space and I must find a telephone to call Moscow!"

Man, the Russian Space Program don't fuck around. That's what I love about them. Their stories of going to space were crazier. Gotta love those Russians.

I wonder if this is the kind of music that Michael Collins would have liked to listen to, in the Columbia space module?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm
Webhamster Henry:

Sergie Krikalev:
Krikalev was in space when the Soviet Union was dissolved on 26 December 1991. With the Baikonur Cosmodrome and the landing area both being located in the newly independent Kazakhstan, there was a great deal of uncertainty about the fate of his mission. He remained in space twice as long as originally planned, spending a total of 311 days in space.[2] Because Krikalev spent so much time in space away from Earth’s center of gravity, time dilation (or the slowing down of clocks) caused him to be 0.02 seconds younger than other people born at the same time as him.[4] He returned to Earth on 25 March and is sometimes referred to as the "last Soviet citizen".[2][5][6][7] These events are documented and contextualized in Romanian filmmaker Andrei Ujică's 1995 documentary Out of the Present.[8] Krikalev's story inspired the 2017 film Sergio & Sergei, directed by Ernesto Daranas.[9]

So, yeah, Buzz and Neil get to tool around on the surface of the moon, and bring back all that moon rock. Neither of those two had a moment during the mission when they were truly alone. (Somewhat isolated, but not alone.) And then there's Michael, up in Columbia, alone...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19pm

↳ Webhamster Henry @11:17
I don't recall. I don't like how the other missions don't get as much publicity... golfing on the moon, tooling around in that weird little car, visiting Surveyor 3 and bringing back pieces of it...

I used to know more of the other missions better as a kid. Over the years, I have to read up before I can even remember better details.

In the truest sense of "experimental" music, I would say that about 25-ish minutes of this just didn't quite work out. I might do another take of this, and try to trim it up to a nice a brief 90 minutes, to see if it retains it's charm without loosing it's way for a bit.

Live and learn. It was an experiment...

I'm still pretty impressed with what NASA did, using essentially a lot of math, and not very powerful computers. It's sort of amazing that any of it worked at all, given how little tech they actually had.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 1:00am

In a way, all of those Apollo missions are more like Submarine missions. They might as well have been wearing diving suits. Like, their gear was so low tech, it's amazing... and also, it WORKED!
