Just wanted to say that yes, I love music, but so enjoy the late night DJ tendency to broadcast bits of dialogue from movies, and other spoken word gems.

Also ,by the way, please talk to us occasionally (I’m kinda new here, so I don’t know your show too well). It’s a lonely world, and alas, we are so divided. When I listen to DJs at this hour, there’s this feeling that I’m not alone, and besides listening to the Dj’s voice, I think about all the other people who are listening.

Yes, maybe there are far fewer than are listening to the later DJs, for obvious reasons. Still though…it’s quality, not quantity. Not to take anything away from the pure day people who listen to Clay Pigeon at, say, about 8:30 on the way to work. I know many such people.

At the same time, I’m a former night person who’s become an ultra day person. During the school year, I wake up wicked early, as they say here in New England, to work as a school librarian in lovely Lowell, Massachusetts, an hour’s drive from Beverly, where I live.

Anyhoo, I just love this time of day when, for some, we’re at the tail end of the day while mine is just beginning, along with those of milk delivery folks, bakers, train conductors…you get the idea.

So I like to think that there are a mix of these folks listening to these dulcet tones. Hello, people…nice to meet you.

Fred, I’m so sorry…lordy, I did that “America and nothing else” thing. Eddie Izzard talked about it when he discussed tthe way we Americans learn history. Basically, the way we hear it before we actually get other sources about this thing besides that social studies teacher who thinks America can do no wrong.

There are, you know, other countries…countries which our constant thirst for more, more, and more have caused them to basically function as strip mines for the US, where we go in, take the good stuff, and leave the rest of the world with dirt.

(and to an ultra conservative, if you’re listening: I know, I know….we’ve done good things, a lot of them under, well, Democrats: The War on Poverty domestically, and The Peace Corps internationally.)

Sorry for doing that American thing. You’re 100 percent right, man. We good?

Don't be too hard on us. After all, we are very insulated from the rest of the world. Constantly bombarded by the most sophisticated propaganda machine in history. We're geographically large and our system often makes smaller countries pay for our economic mismanagement so we don't feel the full repercussions. In addition, we're often too exhausted from the pursuits of consumerism to look very far beyond our gilded cages.

Aitch…just wanted to say that boy, I hope my post didn’t come across as a “American suddenly realizes rest of world, acts superior to other Americans while basically continuing their hyper consumerist lifestyle that causes them to blind themselves to their tacit endorsement of their basic rape of the world, while China also rapes the worlds and sells us all the stuff we buy.
  3:58am
derekleif:

And by the way, just to post a pet anxiety:

China takes millions of tons of e waste each year.

This goes to the rural areas, where people smash up the stuff to get the bits of gold on the computer components (maybe a grain of sand’s worth from each computer).

The scraps of smashed computer contain lead.

This gets into the groundwater and destroys the water table.

They have to truck in water.

There are 1.3 billion Chinese.

The United States has a lot of water.

I got this, by the way from the documentary “Manufactured Landscapes,” about photographer Edward Burtynsky (may have spelled name wrong), and his pieces of ways that humans have changed the landscape, often for the worse.

derekleif:

Ah, Bill, what can I tell ya…I kinda love blathering. I figure I’m doing less damage by posting to bulletin boards.

I just love boards. Social media is just so….I don’t know, it’s too much. There’s something wonderfully nostalgic about a simple bulletin board where all a person can post is words and links to other things.

It’s sort of a window back to the days of the release David Foster Wallace’s “Infinite Jest,” where every page had its own analogue hyperlinks in the form of over 100 pages of footnotes and errata.
  4:51am
derekleif:

So much of the text and spoken words online are fifteen second snippets of, well, not even thought…a fragment of the mind, not even the equivalent of a word…just a syllable, a shriek.

So nice to read intelligent comments. I can only hope that mine are worth the space they take up, and the time it takes a person to read them. They’re never getting that time back, dontcha know….I hope they don’t feel as if they wasted time on me.

Strandlund:

Good Morning Land Phil and all those tuned in...
  5:02am
derekleif:

A STORY IN ONE POST:

Bill posted that I should stop writing about my life and listen to the music. I did.

The man was a genius. Suddenly, the truth of the statement froze right there, on the bulletin board, like the naked lunch at the end of the fork that William Burroughs discussed in the introduction to the book, that moment suspended in time.

God, I thought, why not just listen to the music and type at the same time?

I typed, and I thought of people smashing heads into other heads. What made it totally appropriate to the music was that these heads did not belong to the people who smashed them together. Those heads had come from funeral homes, and the bodies of nasty children who woke up decapitated on Christmas morning.

Because that was what Bill Hanke’s post did to me: it forced me to acknowledge the evil elf who’s had enough of the those kids who bully others because of their choice to be what they want to be, including the prefix “they.”

I posted my post. Older. Wiser. More potent.

Thanks so much, JReganK. I love writing in little snippets of maybe 300 words tops. I think it’s the writing style of the 21st Century: paragraphs of three sentences tops, and tight, simple prose that hurtles down the screen (because it’s not a page, it’s a screen).

Today’s writing gets just about this much space. People are reluctant to even scroll a bit. About the most I can get away with is four screens of this drivel before a person cries “enough, enough.”

As it is, there’s different lengths for different mediums. Bulletin board posts need to be shorter, as longer posts tend to make a person think “oh, no…another long, crazy post from someone who’s been on TikTok for too long, and who, after not thinking a rational, complete thought for a few hours, is now trying to upload their brain’s frantic attempt to store the miniature plotlets of close to 700 videos with beginnings, climaxes, and then, before even a denouement, an abrupt end, leaving the consumer literally starved for story.
  5:21am
derekleif:

I think my main goal in life, or one of them, at least, ought to be to somehow get 100,000 people to Venmo a buck to @derekleif. Then I can spend my life waking up at 2 or so and posting things that comment on the music and life in general.

And I’d just like to say thanks to Spikey BXL for posting that extremely cool link to a tasty piece of Belgian music.

I see your point. Reading is exhausting for those out of practice and seemingly redundant when you consider the amount of info goes into visual media. A picture being worth a thousand words etc.. I believe that overall, you will find very intelligent people here that can absorb and appreciate an expanded volume of the written word.

And you know, JReganK, the actual piece of writing doesn’t have to be that long to say something worth reading.

As a librarian, I have one request of a piece of writing, followed by one of two further requests:

1-Get my attention
2-If it’s fiction, make me say “and then what happened?”
3-If it’s non-fiction, make me say “what else?”

Spikey BXL, I just wanted to say, as a librarian, that it’s so nice to have a person on this board who comes from Belgium, the country that gave us Jacques Brel, Rubens, Audrey Hepburn (who was born there, even though she grew up in England), Jan and Pieter Brueghel, Magritte, and, of course, last but by no means least, the very kind and talented Jean Claude Van Damme.

Now I wanna visit Belgium.
