I reckon if PowerPop is a thing that devolves from PeteTownshend (it's his term as far as I know!) ...then there is a thing I call 'SmartPop' that devolves from RayDavies...
@ the same time as the PowerChord devolves from DaveDavies (as much as Townshend - while remembering LinkWray of course...)
TheKinks are just better than something I could have imagined. It's hard to even articulate ...like something I would dream about @ night - but real ! Like 'Forever Changes' being the Best, & yet Underexposed for decades ...Village Green remains so !
When I was really young - a little kid really - I collected all the Beatles' LPs. Then ...I saw TheWho's first album in the $1.98 bin ! Well ...that Changed My Life forever...
But then ...there in the normal section - for a full $4.98 : The Kinks Greatest Hits - on Reprise. That was more to save up for ...but something told me ...that was Next. By some infallible instinct ...I Needed That.

I find it strange that their late 70s, early 80s releases are not as celebrated. Besides their early stuff, I love Sleepwalker, Misfits, and Low Budget releases.
I have the Working Man's Cafe I bought at his show in Austin a few years band. Classic Ray Davies lyrics!
Thank you Joe!!!

'See My Friends' here released 30th July, 1965 (I've read after TheKinks toured Asia / the Pacific ??)
...there's Indian music in the restaurant scene in the Help! movie midyear - but it's not Beatles Music. They did not put out actual Sitar til 'Norwegian Wood' on RubberSoul 3rd Dec., '65 ...I might maintain there's an Eastern tinge to 'There's A Place' from way back '63 - with somewhat 'Mystical' lyrics (it's riffing off 'There's A Place For Us' from WestSideStory - which was new then...)
