Most Pop~Rawk Groups didn't get beyond Two Part Harmony they learned @ the feet of the EverlyBros. Not even the Beatles & BYrdS - as often as you'd think !
...But BrianWilson in the BeachBoys studied the FourFreshman- & routinely had many Vocal Parts & Harmonies going on. & a little bit of that 'Blood Harmony' with relatives thing too...

You're right about how disco won at the end. Just like Gloria Gaynor sang "I Will Survive", it survived in various dance music. Take Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" in the 1980s, LCD Soundsystem's "Daft Punk is Playing at my House" from 2005, Daft Punk's "Get Lucky" from 2013 andd the list goes on. Disco rules. Even Blondie and the Rolling Stones knew it early on.

- & push back on the Racist Homophobic narrative a bit.
Disco overtook everything for years & years. In the City - & @ the beginning - maybe it was about Queers, People of Color & heavy drug users.
When & Where I was - it was the precise *opposite* ! The Jocks were all into trendy Disco - & us Stoner Outsiders were the Rawkers.
So much Disco was Formulaic & pandering crap. *Now* they cherrypick - & give you NileRogers & DonnaSummer. Which *are* great. But that's barely the smallest fraction of what we force-fed - on *all* the Radio - in all the Charts - in all the Venues (which stopped having Live Bands)
...it was yer Dad wanting to be John Travolta.
It was unremittingly & interminably awful.
I real sorry - but that's my own perspective on the reality of what occurred.

Having said that, Disco's main problem (to me), was the constant 4 beats to the measure bass drum in every track. But above that, some of the finest "soul singing" of the time was happening. (And that 4 bass beats to the measure stipp powers current dance music, which is one of the ways Disco Won in the end)

& yes also - even then I would've felt - & admitted that a lot of was just the current Soul or Funk - & some of it was good.
& as you acknowledge - & as I stated earlier - a great mass of Disco was asphyxiatingly Formulaic. As George Clinton said - like making love with just one stroke. & that is *not* good Soul or Funk ...or anything else.

Quite simply - Amplification & PAs have changed over the eras - one gets delivered quite serious Volume & Bass directly into your face in small venues.
Been years since I would think of going to a Show without earplugs as @ least an option.
The irony is standing near my Marshall practice amp in my own room here 12' feet away from this laptop - I can't bring myself to stick things in me earz for what I produce myself ...but that's none of your interest...
