Early 80's, AM radio, Jammin' Geni Sheldon show introduced me to early hip hop. My brother and I danced in the living room to it weekly

listener james from westwood:

First hip-hop: “Rapper’s Delight.” Back in the day. Not two blocks from here. Mom surprisingly just let it play in the car. I was stunned. Had no idea you could ever do that on a record for so long, or play such a huge track on the radio.

I wasn't born until 1980, so by the time I was paying attention to groups/music/names, I'm not sure who would've been my earliest influence. But it definitely was early!

Not my first Hip Hop memory...but early enough. My two friends and I went ventured through the Holland Tunnel to see Def Jam at MSG in 1987. That was definitely some crazy shit, and left a big fingerprint on me.

First recollection I have of hip hop was seeing RUN DMC perform My Adidas on tv. It made my brain tilt sideways bc it was so distinctly different from the usual hair metal and new wave pop junk that typically was being broadcast at the time. And it also triggered my first experience with synesthesia so the entire experience left its mark in multiple ways.
