The Psychotik Tanks  Let's Have A Party   Favoriting Presages  4AD  1980  Psychotic Tanks were a short-lived post-punk band whose lone release was Security Idiots, a Conny Plank-produced single issued in 1980 on the equally obscure Idiot label. The band counted Bjorn, Roberty Crash, Schengel, and Schruuv as its members. The B-side of the single, "Let's Have a Party," was included on 4AD's Presage(s) compilation, which was released later in 1980. The song was reprised on Natures Mortes, a Japan-only compilation from 1981 that was reissued on CD in 1997. Sound-wise, they resembled other labelmates such as Bauhaus and the Birthday Party. Fitting with most of the other 4AD acts of the early '80s, little is known of the members' involvements that followed, if any.      0:04:06 (Pop-up)
Sort Sol & Lydia Lunch  Boy/Girl   Favoriting Ruby Don't Take Your Love to Town 7"  Medley  1986  Sort Sol is a Danish rock band from Copenhagen, Denmark. The band was formed in 1977 as a punk rock outfit, originally under the name Sods (stylized as SODS). The name Sort Sol was taken in the early 1980s. It translates to English as black sun and is named after a nature phenomenon particular to Denmark, where huge bird flocks gather in the sky and appear to block out the sun. The Danish press often refers to their musical style as punk due to their origin, though nearly everything they have put out since 1980 is more reminiscent of styles such as post-punk, art-rock, gothic rock and even industrial music. The band released their first studio album Minutes to Go in February 1979 which is considered the first Danish punk album. They went on to release Under en sort sol in 1980, a more experimental album, influenced in part by Joy Division, Pere Ubu and Television.      0:05:58 (Pop-up)
Malaria!  Geh Duschen   Favoriting Revisited  ROIR  1983  Singing of capitalism, love and sex in both German and English, it wasn’t long afger forming until Malaria went on a European tour which included a John Peel session for the BBC and recording a single ‘How do you like my new dog?” for a label in Belgium. Managed by Factory Records’ Mark Reeder, the release of Malaria’s first 12” self-titled EP saw the band support British visionaries such as New Order, Siouxsie and the Banshees and The Slits. Yet it was Malaria’s third release in 1982 entitled ‘New York Passage (Your Turn to Run)’ which accomplished international recognition outside of Germany’s electro-industrial scene. The EP entered the Top 10 independent charts in both the US and the UK, and catalysed an astonishing American tour, with performances at renowned venues such as The Mudd Club appearing with The Birthday Party, John Cale and a show with Nina Hagen at Studio 54. Malaria! took a hiatus in 1984; perhaps it was due their musical habits of disruption and tumult, or the frustration of not being taken seriously as musicians in an all-female group. As Bettina later said, being in an all-girl band was important because they couldn’t be heard amongst male members: “Women have a different kind of rhythm, which you can hear very clearly in Gudrun’ drumming. She always got the compliment that she couldn’t keep time (laughs) but it was intentional, because we wanted to break the pattern that was ever pervasive in punk music…We wanted to explore the female aspect, free from preconceptions and established rules.”      0:08:36 (Pop-up)
Modern English  Swans On Glass   Favoriting Mesh & Lace  4AD  1981  Though most of the world remembers them for their throwback earworm of a hit "Melt With You", their first two albums, 'Mesh and Lace', and, 'After the Snow', portray a starkly different band that fit in with an alternate picture of the 1980s. Modern English’s debut Mesh and Lace finds the band relying on off-kilter, repetitive rhythm playing and sharp, jittery guitars to create this overall mood of alienation and cold distance. There isn’t much in terms of memorable melodic creations, though; Modern English were a relatively new band and were clearly still figuring out how to properly write songs as a result. What’s here is largely ideas, concepts that the band were tinkering with in an effort to create something closer to art than pop. When judged on those terms, Mesh and Lace is largely a success, and it’s still a captivating listen, even if it isn’t the most purely enjoyable album in the world.      0:12:51 (Pop-up)

The Gospel According To The Meninblack

Liberty

1981

Their fifth album picked up on the ‘meninblack’ moniker and made it the centrepiece of the record. It continued to explore themes of aliens, conspiracies around global control, and biblical references that had appeared in songs like “Meninblack” and “Who Wants the World?” The opening track, “Waltzinblack” (were they creating hashtags thirty years ahead of their time?) wasn’t quite like anything heard before and evolved from the “Meninblack” track from The Raven and continued the subdued and experimental nature of the recent singles and “Vietnamerica.”

OSEES  The Fish Needs A Bike   Favoriting Intercepted Message  In The Red  2023  New OSEES album alert!!!!!!! Released via their Bandcamp just hours before this show!!!!!! (And tomorrow via In The Red.) This is a cover of the highly underrated 1981 track from Blurt (we'd played it back on our highly underrated Jan 27 "Crab Day!" episode. Transmissions From Echo Beach: January 27, 2022: Crab Day! (AKA Some Of My Best Friends Are Ranters.)) Snapped Ankles covered it, too, earlier this year on their "Blurtations" EP, which is an entire 6-song EP of Blurt cover versions. "A message from John Dwyer: ”A pop record for tired times. Sugared with bits of shatterproof glass to put more crack in your strap. At long last, Verse / chorus A weathered thesaurus This is Osees bookend sound Early grade garage pop meets proto-synth punk suicide-repellant Have a whack at the grass or listen while flat on your ass Heaps of electronic whirling accelerants to gum up your cheapskate broadband Social media toilet scrapers unite! The Fall  City Hobgoblins   Favoriting "Live at St. Helens Technical College '81  Castle Face  1981 / 2021  Write-up Mar 31, 2021: "The mighty The Fall! The band of a lifetime, at one of their best, with one of the best sound-board recordings we've ever heard!" //// "Former Fall member Marc Riley discovered this bootleg recording on Twitter, then approached John Dwyer of the Osees’ label, Castle Face Records, to discuss officially releasing it. Live at St. Helens Technical College takes us back to the early eighties, and it's one of the best sound-board recordings of the Fall ever. They are on fire with all the cuts from Slates mini album plus a host of tracks from Grotesque and Dragnet." //// ""I’ve had the pleasure of being a Fall fan since I was a teen. I was lucky enough to have some guidance from my local record shop stoner-lords. They turned me on to many of my heroes, but once I heard my first slanted and barky Fall song, I was part of the army for life. The word prolific gets tossed around a lot. It almost seems like a slag-off in the press, as if they wish the artist would produce less so they wouldn’t have to do their self imposed job of judging releases for the rabble. The Fall is subjected to this lazy word often. Yet I can honestly say that I am SO thankful for any nugget of Fall that lands at my feet and in my brain. Live Fall performances are always a pleasure because they seem to take what already made the Fall great and push it even a bit more into the rough and bloody uncharted wasteland that is drug scorched proto-punk and heady political poetry. So, it is with great pleasure that we introduce this Fall bootleg soundboard recording to you. Recorded during one of the many strong points in the bands vast and mighty history. They really burn bright here and bring every ounce of what you expect from this formidable force. We have reached out to every surviving member of the band, the sound person, the bootlegger who recorded it and the photographer and received their blessings & help piecing it all together. Castle Face will be donating 50% of our profits to Centrepoint which helps the homeless in the Manchester area get back on their feet, so the local and deserving Fall fans get a little, and give a little back, too. Nothing but the hits here folks and as raw as you dig it. This one really is exceptional in terms of live sound for The Fall. All the stars were aligned over St. Helens that eve. And it wouldn’t be complete with a bit of Fall fan saltiness so, fuck you too, Jason.” - John Dwyer      0:31:57 (Pop-up)
EXEK  Welcome To My Alibi   Favoriting The Map and the Territory  ForeignRecordCo  2023  New album releases October 6, 2023... This first single from the forthcoming album has been available since Aug 10. EXEK are from Melbourne, Australia. On their Bandcamp they say: "Post-punk we suppose.", which is an excellent bio! As for the album: "Australian sextet EXEK return with their sixth studio album, The Map and the Territory. Self-recorded throughout 2021 to 2022, frontman Albert Wolski describes it as ‘‘perhaps less ambitious than some previous EXEK releases. In a positive way, obviously’’. Comprising of eight tracks, there is a greater focus on song craftsmanship, where elongated jams play second fiddle to choruses and hooks. These new tracks will translate effectively into a live environment, and are destined to quickly become set favourites. And yes of course, the iconic EXEK album soundmarks remain ever present - dubbed out drums, guitar’s that sound like robot’s from Forbidden Planet, and deep synths that recall The Idiot. //// EXEK once again stay true to their trademark recording process - one of endless overdubs, allowing for maximal control whilst editing. Lots and lots of edits. Drummer Chris Stephenson would perform a collection of beats, that would then be sampled, and therefore plant the seed for ideas for songs. Seamstress Requires Regular Breaks might be the best example of this, where fluid jazz-funk drumrolls morph into a rigid post-punk march, and then back again, and then back again. But the funk doesn’t stop there. Welcome to my Alibi and Glow of Good Will pick up where 90’s hip-hop and R&B left off - smooth and sexy and a little bit dangerous. On the flip side of the dynamic spectrum, The Lifeboats and It’s Just a Flesh Wound, Darling sit facing towards the group’s more loud motorik arsenal. On EXEK’s latest offering, both the map and the territory are equally balanced." Wanna email them? Apparently you can try it here: soundexec@gmail.com //////// https://exek.bandcamp.com/ //////// +++ Excellent "film clip" for this new song here: EXEK - Welcome to my Alibi (Film Clip)    *   0:34:24 (Pop-up)
Snapped Ankles  Tube Plane   Favoriting Blurtations  The Leaf Label Ltd.  2023  From a 6-song EP tribute to Blurt, made available for RSD earlier this year & later available more widely. Sez Snapped Ankles: "Blurt are a big deal back in the forest. We focused our logs on a band that we’ve always admired for their dedication to the simplicity of groove, and their outsider stance. Matia Bazar  Elettrochok   Favoriting Elettrochock - 12"  WEA  1983  Matia Bazar is an Italian pop band formed in Genoa in 1975. The original members of the group were Piero Cassano (keyboards), Aldo Stellita (bass), Carlo Marrale (guitar, vocals), Giancarlo Golzi (drums) and Antonella Ruggiero (vocals). They represented Italy in the 1979 Eurovision Song Contest with a song called "Raggio di luna". They are known for the quality of their female vocalists...and these vocals are definitely a tour de force! While probably more italodisco/new wave than post punk, the chorus of this delightful synthpop romp has some darker leanings that we definitely hear in modern takes of "post punk" today....      1:01:33 (Pop-up)
Belaboris  Kolme Askelta   Favoriting Once Upon A Time  Dark Entries  2013  Belaboris was a Finnish all female group. The band moniker is taken from a combination of the names of the two famed horror film actors Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff. They were conceived in1982 as the brainchild of Finnish producer Kimmo Miettinen. What Malcolm McLaren had been to The Sex Pistols, Miettinen was to Belaboris. He would put together an all-girl band that looked great in photographs but were backed by professional musicians. The first line-up was Vilma Vainikainen on main vocals, Sisko Vainikainen and Rita on back-up plus Jake and Mari who did not sing at all. The backing band behind Belaboris was a local New Wave group called Tyhjät Patterit ( which translates to Empty Batteries). The "band" disbanded in 1984.... In Finland the synthetic Futurist/New Romantic pop was simply called “Futu”. Belaboris were in their own peculiar, undefinable no-woman’s-land, in between the Finnish Futu and Gothic scenes. Three decades on, Belaboris have grown a considerable posthumous cult reputation that has spread also outside their native country, even defying the language barrier. Maybe Miettinen’s idea worked, after all.      1:06:17 (Pop-up)
Testcard F  Bandwagon Tango   Favoriting Bandwagon Tango 7"  BACKS Records  1983  This is a very pricey little 7" that I wished I owned. Formed in 1981, Testcard F were at the leading edge of Techno Pop, building their own electronic percussion and happily ignoring all musical conventions. From a modest start with a demo on Radio Norfolk (yes it used to feature local bands) the Testies amassed a small and enthusiastic following. Live performances were enjoyably shambolic and involved hitting litter bins, coat racks and other items salvaged from UEA to give a human feel to the proceedings. The drum machine was primitive, took hours to program and could hold one song only, hence they used backing tapes. These were a box of cassetes (from BB Adams) with one backing track per song, often containing just the drums. The idea was that the order of the set could be varied easily, but occasionally the wrong tape went in, with interesting results. Usually the audience enjoyed the gigs, occasionally they didn't. There are some places you're stared at with malice from the moment you enter the room and this happened once or thrice to the band, usually with mutterings of "not a proper band - no guitars" etc. One gig at The Big Apple in Great Yarmouth was notable for the compere pulling the plug half way through and quipping "Thank you that was Testcard F - you won't be hearing them again". Shortly afterwards someone threw a bar stool across the bar, shattered the mirror and the police stormed the building. The band beat a hasty retreat as the venue descended into chaos. Interestingly the go-go dancers in the cages (classy) didn't seem at all surprised. Testcard F supported OMD and SPK amongst others, but winning the Norwich heat of Battle of the Bands and a Peel session in 1984 were probably their finest hours.      1:09:13 (Pop-up)

The "group" were publicised as a quartet with members named Darryl, Jacki, Paul and Diane, but in reality these individuals did not exist and for media interviews their parts were played by actors, with the band's lead singer Darryl portrayed by musician Frank Tovey. Gustaf  Design (Beck Remix)   Favoriting Gustaf (Beck Remix) [Digital Single]  Royal Mountain Records  2021  Lee Paradise play "the Wavelength Summer Thing" on Saturday, Aug 19. This song was released in 2014 -- "If you haven’t heard of Gustaf by now, then brace yourself. The Brooklyn-based band—a self-described “glob” of “action figures”—have earned the coveted endorsement of Beck, who feels that the post-punk fivesome is making the best new music in America today. The band—made up of Lydia Gammill (vocals), Tina Hill (bass), Melissa Lucciola (drums), Vram Kherlopian (guitar) and Tarra Thiessen (vocals and percussion)—has earned its alt-rock credentials with a sound that’s reminiscent of Blondie, Joy Division, and Beck (of course). Gustaf’s debut album, Audio Drag For Ego Slobs, perfectly showcases the band’s knack for making dance-worthy music fit for our mid-apocalyptic moment, but it was the band’s electrifying on-stage presence that caught Beck’s eye in a pre-pandemic Brooklyn loft. The interaction sparked a relationship that led, all these months later, to the rock icon remixing “Design,” his favorite track off of Audio Drag For Ego Slobs." Water Palace Kingdom was released April 26, 2014 through Pleasance Records/Not Unlike Records. Lee recorded the album over a week while recovering from a bout of flu he picked up on tour with Hooded Fang. The instrumentation is minimal and focused around receptive rhythms and sparse vocals. Wavelength Music Series (Toronto) - Official Website //// Of this track: "This is an ambient album, Which is something that I’ve always wanted to do as a cohesive project of its own. Ambient music has always been a huge part of what I do and love, and most of my discography features ambient music, and atmospheres heavily throughout; but this will be the first time I am releasing an album which is strictly an ambient album without lyrics or traditional song structures. It is based entirely around moods, environments, textures, tonal atmospheres and settings. //// my goal for this project was to make a standalone album meant to stick to more organic, ambient aesthetic presented using guitars, loops, effected pianos/ vocal, room sounds and other recorded atmospheres, all recorded into or manipulated using my tascam 4 track tape machine in some way. //// I’ve always been huge on labels like constellation records and am heavily influenced by artists like Godspeed, do make say think... At the same time I love the sounds created by artists like the dead Texan, stars of the lid, bing and Ruth, Loscil, eluvium combined with more textural ambient music like jonsi and Alex riceboy sleeps (back in 2014 I spent a whole winter listening to that album basically every single night while I slept, so it’s probably embedded in my subconscious)" //// Released March 4, 2022 //// Andrew McLeod - everything //// https://sunnsetter.bandcamp.com/

Sunnsetter play the Wavelength Summer Thing on Sunday, Aug 20. More info here... Wavelength Music Series (Toronto) - Official Website //// Of this track: "To me, the pieces are a sonic representation of what I was either thinking about, feeling, or a setting created through visual memory within myself during the process of recording the piece. //// As a way of storytelling i suppose without the use of spoken language, just tonal and textural language. You as a listener will hopefully be able to create your own associations to these recordings. if I achieved what I intended, then we may be able to share that same association, or physical and emotional space through your experience of listening. //// It [had] been almost 2 years since the last time I released a body of work and it makes me feel weird to say that considering I am always making music, and take the craft very seriously, most of my time in life is spent either playing, making or thinking about music in some way. //// This album is meant to be a companion for both bleak days, and hopeful days in the warmth of the sun. these tracks were recorded between 2018 and 2022, some of which were created in the winter and some of which were created in the summer. My intention is for the overall mood of the album itself to vary in its emotional spectrum and atmosphere, but remain cohesive. //// Much love to you all." //// Released March 4, 2022 //// Andrew McLeod - everything //// https://sunnsetter.bandcamp.com/

Kitchen & The Plastic Spoons  The Poet   Favoriting Best Off  Ill Wind Records  2007  Kitchen And The Plastic Spoons were part of the new DIY generation starting bands, making self-produced singles and rapidly breaking up. Their sound echoes the speedy chaotic energy with the synthesizer as its driving pulse. Anne's vocals have a sense of urgency. They didn't' sound like any other band in Sweden at the time, having more in common with American bands, Devo, The Screamers and Pere Ubu.      1:48:08 (Pop-up)
Wasted Youth  I Wish I Was A Girl   Favoriting Wild And Wandering  Bridge House Records  1981  Formed in the summer of 1979, Wasted Youth were an East London post-punk band who became a small phenomenon across Europe playing their dark psychedelic bohemian rock. n 1976, Maurizio Arcieri and his wife Christina Moser formed the duo under the name "Chrisma" in Milan. The name was a combination of their initials. The very same year, the couple moved to London to record "U" and "Amore" with the producer Nico Papathanassiou and his brother Vangelis under the management of Anthony Fawcett. Their collaboration with Papathanassiou and Vangelis (yes, that Vangelis...)continued through 1978 with the album Chinese Restaurant.

Tones On Tail  Real Life   Favoriting Pop  Beggar's Banquet  1984  While still a member of Bauhaus, Ash formed Tones on Tail early in 1982, originally as a duo with Glenn Campling, an art school friend and flatmate who had also been a roadie for Bauhaus. After the break-up of Bauhaus in 1983, Ash and Campling were joined by Bauhaus's drummer Kevin Haskins and the band became a full-time concern for all three members. he band disbanded in late 1984, and Ash and Haskins quickly formed Love and Rockets with former Bauhaus bassist David J. Of all Bauhaus and Bauhaus related projects Tones On Tail is the best one I WILL FIGHT YOU ON THIS. Gothic Doom Dance Pop...yes please! This tune is transcendental and epic in its majesty.      1:56:02 (Pop-up)

Hi Babs! Hi Derek!

Thanks for playing the Sort Sol/Lydia Lunch track! That's the first time I've ever heard that track! So great to hear something LL that rarely got my attention! Btw, I'm sure I've mentioned before on this chatboard that I've seen Lydia perform an impromptu poetry reading at Rutgers U. with her one-time collaborator JG Thirlwell in attendance, which gave me the perfect opportunity to meet JG in person. What a cool guy he is! So dignified! Been a fan of his since first discovering all his Foetus material in the late 80's. And I've heard most (if not all) of Lydia's poetry readings on record by way of one particular DJ at the university's radio station who dedicated one hour of his program to shed a spotlight on artists who've collabed with LL.

↳ Song: "Elettrochok" by "Matia Bazar"
According to Italian Wikipedia, Matia Bazar means Crazy Bazar. (See article for details on origin.)
Ok, back to drinking beer.

No mate! I watched the game at the same pub the very next night though. But sheepishly sipping on a few low alc beers, before heading home to bed after the match.

yeah, I keep track of what i drink and the abv now (and time spent drinking), unless i'm in a safe space and can let it go...(i usually mix up kombucha and non-alc microbrews in the mix as well...

There was plenty of weird synthphobia back then...maybe distilled by Rachel Sweet's "Girl With A Synthesizer" ("she's getting her enjoyment/we're on unemployment")

the chicago/balearic house party that found me at cafe/brewery last saturday was a safe place for me to dance (in public for the first time in 2 years), and i didn't have to worry about anyone nicking my laptop...(my fortunes are turning when parties find me)

ha! not even just back then! I was told that my electroclash/discopunk band "ruined one of the best guitarists in the city by making him play synths" in the early 2000s...the stigma is REAL

I hear that you and your band have sold your guitars and bought turntables.
I hear that you and your band have sold your turntables and bought guitars."

I wasn’t a huge crime/city/solution fan, more appreciator. But freakin loved Creepers R’n’R Licorice Flavour album. I never found any others. Want to get that Creepers: Sleeper Retrospective (1989).

All the Marc Riley & The Creepers / Creepers releases are great, but of course I'd say that. I emailed him once to find out if he'd ever re-issue them, he figured not. (At least 10 years ago.)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40pm
ultradamno:

The first one I got was Miserable Sinners, that seemed one of the more common ones. It's really good.

C&TCS can be forbidding, but rewarding. I thought the last one (2013, I think) American Twilight was masterful. The track Daniel Blumin played Monday from this new one sounded awfully good.

Awww, thanks E(VT)! Great questions & comments on your side, too! I love Gudrun Gut, and the Monika label... Esp. her song "You Move Me", with the haunting and excellent video of her daughter dancing... I also very much enjoy Mania D, but confess not to knowing or remembering a lot about them...
