I like the book and show independently of each other. Not sure how great of an adaptation over it all it was
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44am
Spatulator (formerly elwyn5150):

↳ zoeybeatrice @3:40
I am annoyed at myself because I've read things and cannot remember most of what I read. I remember parts of that book but can't remember the actual ending. I know the protagonist meets the writer and the writer isn't in an actual castle.

Have you read A Scanner Darkly? I thought that was a really good adaptation..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44am
tom tom the pipers son:

↳ zoeybeatrice @3:40
probably easier to adapt a crappy book to tv or film, with a good book you're playing an impossible game of catch-up
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46am
tom tom the pipers son:

↳ tom tom the pipers son @3:44
can't really think of any examples though...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46am

↳ Spatulator (formerly elwyn5150) @3:44
I think it might have differed in the show. Im not sure if they ever reached the end of the book. Might have been cancelled before.

I havent! Ill have to check it out. I tried the short story mini series adaptation from a few years ago and it was terrible.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48am
Spatulator (formerly elwyn5150):

↳ zoeybeatrice @3:46
I've downloaded the short story mini series but haven't watched it yet. I had high hopes for it because Bryan Cranston was producing it if I recall correctly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:51am
Spatulator (formerly elwyn5150):

↳ tom tom the pipers son @3:44
I used to be in a Meetup group called Book-to-Film Adaptation. Everybody read a specific book at home then met at the cinema to watch the adaptation then discussed afterwards.

Generally, adaptations fell into 3 categories:
* chop things down to fit into the film
* rarer: keep a core idea and rewrite everything (eg The Birds)
* fit everything and make it too long.

funny, was thinking hitchcock, psycho was based on a novel too by robert bloch, don't know quality of novel or how it was adapted...

I really loved Minority Report the short story, never watched the Tom Cruise movie, but watched the sequel TV series.

“The basic thing is, how frightened are you of chaos? And how happy are you with order?” PHILIP K DICK
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56am
Spatulator (formerly elwyn5150):

↳ phualu @3:55
I've kind of thought that Dick's most common themes were "what is reality? what is really real?" more than chaos vs order.

Coincidentally, I was just reading Philip K. Dick's FOIA request/correspondence letters to the FBI before tuning into this show. Apparently PKD's house was broken into quite a few times, and he was approached by neo-nazis who wished for him to encode cryptic messages into his next book after The Man In The High Castle. He was contacting the FBI to find out if there was a connection between items stolen during his house break-ins and perhaps it being some reprisal for refusing the neo-nazi's book idea suggestions. Shortly after that he started experiencing the pink beams of light phenomena. PKD was an interesting dude, albeit not very easy to be around at times I'd imagine.
