Columbia Workshop | The Fall Of The City (Listen: Pop-up) | from April 11, 1937 | (no label) |
Written by Archibald MacLeish and narrated by Orson Welles, this is a story about fear and the willing abdication of democracy - and the welcoming of dictatorship. One of the most important radio broadcasts ever, in terms of its content and its impact on the development of the medium of radio itself.
From John Dunning's On The Air: The Encyclopedia Of Old Time Radio "But The Fall Of The City was not just another radio show. 'It seemed to capture the fear of its time,' Barnouw would write; and it opened the way for radio as a new and accepted art form." Also from Dunning: "There was now an understanding, said Newsweek, 'that radio drama, both in the writing and presentation, was something radically different from drama of the stage and screen.'" The Workshop was a true pioneering, experimental and freedom-giving show, and was even protected from the pressures of selling advertising - none was allowed, and there was no sponsor. A few lines from "The Fall Of The City": "The people invent their oppressors. They wish to believe in them. They wish to be free of their freedom….the long labor of liberty ended. They're shouting with happiness….." |

Les Chakachas | Love is like a Violin (track 4) | Arriba! | RCA International | Phat, sentimental sound. Feels like it's the slow song at the record hop. | ||||||

||||||||||
Tom Recchion | Narcotic (track 6) (Listen: Pop-up) | I Love My Organ | Birdman | Very soft and ephemeral, romantic, dreamy, comes on slowly, slow, glows subtly.
