Some time ago I sat next to a student from China at my work. I brought in the few Chinese records I had so I could find out more about them. They were good but definitely not pop. The student laughed her ass off when I showed her the records. Turns out I had Communist Party propaganda operas that no one in China listens too - hahaha!
