This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

When i Finally found LP copy of this album (mid to late 80s) I was floored! (no preview streaming or anything of the sort). Was already well into post punk Dub & such (Slits/Bovell, Clash/Mikey Dread, etc)…but even hearing previous new age steppers hadn’t prep’d me for this early A.Sherwood fractured epic. Still have it and cherish it. Which brings me to the query:anybody been lucky enough to hear & determine the quality of fairly ‘recent’ boxset remasters of many of the classic Sherwood bands: Steppers boxset, African Head Charge boxset, Dub Syndicate boxset ? Etc. Curious how they sound.
Ps:One of my faves was the “Playgroup” releases.

FS: thanks so much for the head-up & info on this K.Kurahara Film "Black Sun"(1964) & Max Roach's wild involvement. i haven't seen it. But the "Jazz-plot" is fascinating to me as is this era of (Japanese) film. Yet i have definitely seen its crazed-jazzy predecessor with a similar cast of actors:"The Warped Ones"(1960). Another tough film, yet well worth the effort if open minded. TCM & Criterion are perhaps the best bets to find them. i find there are several worthy films of this era that feature wild use of jazzy/beatnik motifs.

Guelewar is so unbelievably good - but when this came out, a lot of reviews were lukewarm, comparing the looseness and amateur accompaniment unfavorably to Guelewar's total excellence. But they missed the point, this is a dynamite record & remains woefully underrated as far as i can tell
