It's been on since this past Wednesday in different Venues, the grand finale is always a 3-7 outdoor show at Thompkin Square Park. I don't always love every artist they present (gone to a few), but there's usually at least one knock out (Charles McPherson is the headliner today).

The portability aspect was also big when they first came out (try playing an LP in your car or bike). That was why I got into them, could record my LPs, take the cassettes with me to my car and get to listen to them heading for work.
The other (more limited) appeal was to "tapers", those folks that recorded every Grateful Dead show, and actually snuck recorders in to many other shows and put together collections of unreleased live tapes (I have a friend who did/does that).
Of course, digital music is more portable than cassettes, and they did disappear for a while, but now they're "retro" and "cool", and inexpensive.
