Daniel i tried (before...not this whole time!)_ to find out about the person you dedicated the set to but maybe i misunderstood?
thought you said "Greg Bennett" but he checked out a few years ago (guitar maker)

in any case, may he rest in peace.

Flipside had zero to do with Orange County. We were from Whittier, LA County. (Yes, we were just over the border, but you know, DMZ and all...) By the time punk waned in Southern California, c. 1979, yes, the OC Huntington Beach dummies infiltrated. But good lord, a little rough and tumble at a show was never in my experience a big deal.

Flipside appeared pretty much contemporary with Slash. They were slicker. We didn't know WTF we were doing, but wasn't that the point?

Come to think of it, Flipside had more than zero to do with OC. The first issue featured an interview with Eulogy from Fullerton, now in retrospect an outlier. Eulogy's guitarist is now Paul McCartney's regular guitarist. That still seems weird to me.

Greg Turner's band VOM (With Richard Meltzer) could stir up an audience. Intelectuals getting a buzz from the violence( Saw it with my own eyes at The Whiskey in 1978) and then writing about it!

All of which kind of raises the question, did Darby ever get the ass of the guy from Huntington Beach who thrashed on his nose and called him 'hippie'?
  11:10pm
Dean:

I spent quality time with Meltzer. Took him to lunch and dinner. Hired him to speak at my alma mater. In my experience, he got no "buzz" from violence. His buzz was, shoot, Ornette, Charlie Patton.

Dean:

Come to think of it, I do recall an early Devo show at the Whisky, when one of the guitarists leapt off the stage into the audience and injured Pete Lanswick, Flipside's photographer. The next show that night we knew when to expect the stage dive and we surrounded the guitarists, who was mighty worried.

I only saw The Germs once, before Kitten Sparkles joined the band. It was at The Elks Lodge. Darby was still Bobby Pyn. He cut his hand breaking bottles, then ran off the stage. The Germs crew proceeded to smash the nice wooden chairs in front of the stage.

They were opening for Arthur Lee is you can believe that.

I saw them at Elks Lodge, too...or did I? I certainly don't remember Love. But I have witnessed Darby cutting himself.

I saw them with Nicky Beat, whom I also saw delivering flowers in downtown LA. Is that perfect, or what?
