I missed any introductions there might have been at the beginning of this show - was this used for, say, Polynesian restaurants?

It is calming. Not screaming at the PC. Just killing the process and rebooting. Not even upset I lost work! hehe

The Cantata 700 is a background music system that used gigantic magnetic tapes, developed by the 3M company. They had an in-house orchestra called the 3M Orchestra that did most of the music. The Cantata was most used from 1965 until some time in the 90s.

"Not screaming at the PC." - You're not going to "rage against the machine"?

A single cartridge could fit more than 24 hours of music.

Wow, that's fascinating! So they didn't have to change tapes every 90 minutes or whatever. Had no idea. And this system was independent from the Muzak company?

This was by the 3M company, but Muzak bought their remaining unsold stock in 1986.

All offered machines are playback only. The first models 94BG and 94BZ, were offered in 1965 and bundled with two cartridges of the customer's choice for US$429.00; equivalent to $3,984 in 2022. The machines played continuously using an auto-reverse mechanism. As the tape reaches one end, the reverse mechanism activates and changes the drive direction. The tape head moves to the other side and the mechanism shifts pinch rollers. The design does not require the head to turn over; instead, the entire head changes position to play the tape at the other side of the tape path. (stolen from wikipedia)

Would love to see someone walking around with a Walkman that could play these tapes.

that last song sounded like a Hawaiian language version of "Cottenfields." Y'know, that "old cottenfields back home" song. Coincidence?

crappy, or at least inappropriate music at tiki bars/restaurants is the bane of my existence. A place near me has great live music, but when they turn on the Spotify playlist, it must be a channel called "The Worst of the '70s": Doobie Brothers, Supertramp...even *shudder* "Afternoon Delight"! Really kills the tiki vibe. Places like that really need to buy one of these 3M gizmos.
