Hmmmm…was that dean of the UC Berkeley School of Law also the frontman of psych rock band Thee Oh Sees?
  10:31pm

I dunno. What I do know is that he left suddenly over Thanksgiving break, because he'd been accused of assaulting a student (whom I knew) during an evening of collegial drinking.

Those angular melodies make Jarrett’s quartet instantly identifiable (unless they snuck in a percussionist and made it a quintet).

I saw the American Quartet (+ 1) in college, when I knew very little about jazz and only the Köln Concert about Jarrett, and the whole thing puzzled me a great deal, though I realized it was quite good, whatever it was. He started out by playing a soprano or wooden flute or something, I think to defuse any idea of solo piano happening.

This is fun. From Wikipedia:

"...in 1996, Western Beef executives revealed that their business had been adversely affected by supposed ties with the Mafia. The proprietor, Peter Castellana, Jr., admitted that he had dismissed his father from the firm because of the latter's association with organized crime. Having overcome the commercial problems, Castellana, Jr., and his brothers stated that they preferred to run the business cleanly and legally. Castellana, Jr, was quoted as saying, 'I'm not in the Mafia, so I don't get any of the benefits of being in the Mafia, but everybody thinks badly of me because they think I'm in the Mafia anyway.'"
