And despite each member of The Band having top and distinctive talents, at the key steps of hooking up with Hawkins and later with Dylan it was Robertson that Hawkins and Dylan first called on.

Rick D used to live pretty close to me here upstate. He was a WONDERFUL guy. About 30 years ago (gulp), we were working together on a taping for local PBS radio show. After the recording, Rick looked at me and my brother-in-law and said, “you guys want to get a drink?” We headed out to the street and I started toward a fairly nice place - a local musicians’ hang. Rick said, “Not there - over there…” and pointed to a notorious, loud biker bar just down the road. We walked in and he said, “I’m buying - what are you guys drinking?” I said, “I’ll just have whatever’s on tap.” Rick said, “I don’t buy beer for anyone. I asked you what we were DRINKING!” And the night went from there. Bet - I’ll never forget it!
