Opening DJ comments with 9 AM intro from our 60 year old reel to reel tape of KOMA In Oklahoma City | 0:00:00 (Pop-up)
Buchanan & Greenfield | The Invasion | Novel 711 | 1964 | Bill Buchanan was a novelty song writer who helped create the Dickie Goodman drop ins and Howard Greenfield was a Brill building songwriter, co-writing many early Neil Sedaka hits and more. | 0:01:39 (Pop-up)
Four Preps | A Letter to the Beatles | Capitol 5143 | 1964 | The 4 Preps were a great late 50's folk quartet, but were fast on Beatlemania with this 45 out the very month the Beatles were first on Sullivan in Feb 64! | 0:03:56 (Pop-up)
NRBQ | C'mon Everybody | Columbia 44937 | 1969 | This 45 issued summer 1969 as their 2nd 45 and totally different and more energetic than the LP version of this Eddie Cochran fave. | 0:06:42 (Pop-up)
Cochise | Love's Made a Fool of You | United Artists 50756 | 1971 | Summer 1971, this Buddy Holly cover is my fave song of the year and a top 10'er on WLS Chicago! | 0:09:01 (Pop-up)
Hilly Michaels | Calling All Girls | Warner Bros 49273 | 1980 | It's summer 1980 and me and my roommate (both 24 years old) work and then layabout with beers diggin Martha Quinn and MTV all night. THIS is one great video from then. I am just about to start 10 years on KZUM-FM Public Radio in Lincoln, Ne. | 0:11:44 (Pop-up)

Husker football legendary announcer Lyle Bremser gets his usual carried away/7-Up the Uncola spot/Bob & Ray Right Guard commercial/ Bing Crosby for Minute Maid/American Bandstand Top 10 Board from late 1965 with #1 opening resembling.......the opening song below! From that AB '66 week, check out PR&R's having fun 1 1/2 minutes into this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DH50HlYAhhA&t=24s |

P.F. Sloan | Karma (Study of Divinations) | Dunhill 4106 | 1967 | First of 4 fave artists ever for me! This, his ONLY 45 where he was listed as "Philip Sloan". Incredible 60s songwriter/singer who WAS the Grass Roots on the early records. | 0:17:26 (Pop-up)
Utopia | Neck On Up | Network 60183 Double | 1982 | This was a supergroup Todd Rundgren had on the side with this cut featuring drummer Willie Wilcox on vocals. Todd had been a fave from his Nazz days of mine and this 1982 LP my fave LP he was a part of. | 0:21:15 (Pop-up)
Fraternal Order of the All | King of Showbiz | J-Bird 1746 | 1997 | This is actually fave Andrew Gold with help from Graham Gouldman. I love Andrew's simple piano pieces best of all. This great LP was reissued by Cherry Red THIS July as a 10" double splatter vinyl LP set and a new gatefold cover (seen here) and 4 extra cuts! | 0:24:05 (Pop-up)
Emitt Rhodes | If I Knew Then | Omnivore 163 | 2016 | Emitt is just SOOO good. I wanted to give his recent Omnivore CD some publicity as all his stuff is just great dating back to Merry Go Round. | 0:28:14 (Pop-up)
Freddy Fredrickson | Mr. Downtown | Playtone 67828 | YES, Back Stabbers/Peter Gunn meet Bobby Rydell for a perfect mystery tune from "That Thing You Do!" movie soundtrack. Actual name:Robert Torti. Somehow, he is NOT in the RNR Hall of Fame: https://www.notinhalloffame.com/the-fictitious-rock-nominees/the-artists/3371-freddy-fredrickson | 0:32:07 (Pop-up)

BEATLES | BEING THERE! | I call this 10 minute montage of Beatles clips ALL from our recordings in Dodge City 60s that because WE WERE THERE! Yeah, sometimes reception was iffy but the thrill outweighed the sound. I get goose bumps everytime I hear these of listen to the full tapes. So many memories. The excitement of recording all these songs when they were out on great stations was just so much fun! In order of first appearing here (If I know what/who they were), you hear WLS Chicago, KOMA OKC, American Bandstand with Charlie O'Donnell filling in for Dickie Clark, WNOE New Orleans, WKYC Cleveland, WABC NYC, WSAI Cincy, and lastly, their 1964 Cleveland concert end broadcasting live on KYW (soon to be WKYC) Cleveland. You'll hear these great DJs and more in order of first heard here: My hero Ron Riley, Bobby Davis, Robbie Rabbit, Cousin Brucie Morrow, Gene Taylor, Johnnie Stevens, Art Roberts, Dex Card, Larry Lujack, Big Jack Armstrong, Chuck Buell, Jim Runyon, Jerry G Bishop, Jim Stagg. | 0:44:36 (Pop-up)
Beatles | She's A Woman | US Capitol 5327 | 1964 | This as recorded by us off Dex Card's WLS Silver $ Survey countdown when the TSW (2 sided winner) was #1 the last 3 weeks of 1964 on WLS (fading and all--about 6 PM Central time). The pic sleeve picture was taken at the 8/20/64 Las Vegas concert! | 0:54:41 (Pop-up)
Mamas & Papas | Dancing in the Street | Dunhill 4057 | 1966 | This may have been a B side and "just a cover version," BUT it is expressly sang that they were dancing IN CHICAGO and thus, equal airplay on WLS as the TSW reached #5 there. | 0:55:49 (Pop-up)
STATION BREAK 4! | Father Flot checks in with advice for the fill in "kid." Iowa/Kansas memories! A big cheer for Father Flot, but not sure the crowd can spell FLOT??? | 0:59:17 (Pop-up)
Sopwith Camel | Postcard from Jamaica | Kama Sutra 224 | 1967 | The "Hello, Hello" gang back with a great followup and perfect for this set for the laid back drug/psych/underground gang. | 1:00:48 (Pop-up)
Phil Ochs | Jimmy Brown/Anti-Drug message | 1973 | NAPRA 1 This anti-drug public service announcement from "Get Off" LP promo only that features tracks from Zappa to Croce to the Dead to B.B. to Hollies and more big stars of the day. https://www.45worlds.com/vinyl/album/napra1 | 1:03:02 (Pop-up)
Gunhill Road | Back When My Hair Was Short | 1972 | Kama Sutra This much slower original version of their big 1973 hit has quite a different lyrics line that would have never been a hit with these lyrics. | 1:04:07 (Pop-up)
Spanky & Our Gang | Commercial | Mercury 61124 & 61227 | A short piece from their first self-titled Summer of Love 1967 debut, altho I first heard when they comped it on their 1969 Spanky "Greatest Hit(s)" LP. | 1:06:31 (Pop-up)
Pilot | Maniac (Come Back) | UK EMI 779 | One of my top 70's fave bands, we hear "Magic" all over TV commercials, but after only 2 US LPs, their next two were not issued in the US. All 4 of their LPs are well worth owning, IMO. This particular LP was recorded in Canada and produced by Roy Thomas Baker of Queen fame. The song was also issued in a totally different styled version on a UK 45 (and his 1976 LP) as a solo by Pilot member and the songwriter, William Lyall. | 1:08:03 (Pop-up)
Color Me Gone | Lose Control | A&M 2646 | Got this great little pop piece that summer 1984 and loved it, altho it ended being their only 45. | 1:13:27 (Pop-up)
Octavian | Good Feeling (to Know) | MCA 40319 | 1974 | We heard this Canadian band's 45 on CHUM Toronto and fell in love with it. It has a Hollies vocal sound and the phasing (here) appears on the US 45 but not on the LP version. | 1:13:56 (Pop-up)
Higher Elevation | Summer Skies | Liberty 56035 | 1968 | In a time when John Carter/Tim Gilbert songs were making their mark, this feel good gem somehow did not make a dent for this Denver area band. | 1:16:16 (Pop-up)

Members | Working Girl | Albion 1012 | 1981 | Another summer 1981 "layabout watching MTV videos" song that had a funny lyric AND video. BUT when the US 45 came out the next year, it was a different version, so I HAD to find the video's original UK 12" release. | 1:19:10 (Pop-up)

The ONLY clip that has survived of me on my first radio station (48 years ago), University of Nebraska's KRNU, when I still had this dream of becoming a big time broadcaster. It didn't happen but it sure was fun to fulfill the dream of being a Top 40 DJ and assuming that "career" died in 1976 when I quit NU as a broadcasting major. We had a top 30 list and one hour we were to play odd numbered chart position songs and the next even numbered to avoid overplaying songs. We could play 2 oldies per hour and play the ABC Contemporary News. BIG TIME, haha! |

Trashmen | Bird Dance Beat | Garrett 4003 | 1964 | Father Flot gives me advice so I up the reverb for this FF sound. Is it ME or Steve Wahrer?? | 1:24:45 (Pop-up)
Sam & Dave | I Thank You | Stax 242 | This Isaac Hayes/David Porter was a great choice to followup "Soul Man" with! | 1:26:53 (Pop-up)
Chiffons | Nobody Knows What's Goin' On (in my Mind but me) | Laurie 3301 | 1965 | That summer 1965 was an awesome one spent in Oklahoma City when I got to see Roger Miller & Gary Lewis concerts as a 9 year old! Despite the girl group sound waning a bit, this group cut thru for another year of hits. We made this reel to reel line recording from Shindig! on July 21, 1965 just after we returned to Dodge City. A great and different sound from this cool group. They sing live vocals over the crudely edited 45 underneath. | 1:30:23 (Pop-up)

RON 'KING B' BRITAIN tribute! The great WCFL Chicago nighttime DJ who was up against my other WLS hero Ron Riley nightly. Ron used drop in stuff better than anyone I ever knew and it became a staple for my radio shows. He was always using humor and "loved" his self-named fans "TULUS" and "CHEEKY DUCKY FRIENDS". He made fun of himself and his copy he read and it was nonstop fun. Here, you get 3 of his commercials. First the Cyrkle 7-Up jingle segment that BPN found later and issued in original form on Sundazed. His computer programmer take and the rather dark commercial for Nutriment also--have you ever heard such an ad? IF I had taken that, maybe I'd have gotten all the chicks?? hahaha |

Savoy Brown | A Hard Way to Go | Parrot 40046 | 1970 | The new decade came in with this great stereo record great for a fairly new FM listener of KEYN-FM Wichita, Ks. | 1:40:18 (Pop-up)
Slade | Look Wot You Dun | Cotillion 44150 | 1972 | Before many knew this awesome group here in the states, Slade was becoming hitmakers in their UK. The funny spelling of song titles was unique and cool but this one caught my ear because I thought it was a new LENNON single! Think back just over a year earlier to 'Remember" by John with his double tracked vocals and pounding piano. Noddy captured it great here and it became their 2nd top 5 UK hit well before the US caught on. | 1:42:33 (Pop-up)
New Colony Six | Muddy Feet (on the Mississippi) | Rev-Ola 2007 | 1970 | What? The BEST Grass Roots song they never recorded? Well, NC6 did this in 70 and never released it until it found its' way onto a groovy NC6/Raymond James Michael comp in 2007. Written by drummer Billy Herman of 60's Exception, Aorta and eventually NC6 Chicago bands! MORE COWBELL! | 1:45:59 (Pop-up)
Hawks | Spend This Evening | Columbia 2086 | 1980 | An Iowa connection for FF! Kirk Kaufman was the genius behind this 80s band as well as 60's/70's Westminst'r and 90's Junior incarnations. They had their own recording studio in Otho, Iowa and put out some great stuff for 4 decades from there! Three Hawks LPs came from their 80s incarnation. This was the unsweetened 1980 demo that helped get the band signed to Columbia a year later. I like the Badfinger sound of it over the glossy 45 version. | 1:48:12 (Pop-up)
U.S. Males | Open Up Your Heart | Britania 101 | 1968 | More Grass Roots sounds with LOTSA fuzz (cool B side written by 5 Americans also) and done on a 1 release only Abnak label! Not only a great 2 sider but it looks so cool too on yellow vinyl DJ copies. I begged Bob Irwin to issue this on CD when Sundazed acquired Abnak's tapes, but beggars cant be choosers. haha. I asked for lots of issues that Bob DID put out, so I am very happy! Written by my late email friend, Artie Wayne. | 1:51:36 (Pop-up)

Sat. Sep 23rd, 11am - 2pm: Bob Brainen & Pete Tomlinson Present The Beau Brummels & Sopwith Camel
Whenever anyone thinks of or documents "The San Francisco Sound" these two bands are rarely included. They were both a bit too early, had hit singles, and were associated with AM radio. They just didn't fit the narrative. We don't care. To us they made great records and that's all that matters and you can tune in and join us listening to them!
