Public Body  Flavour of Labour   Favoriting Flavour of Labour  Six Tonnes De Chair Records  2022  Public Body are from Brighton, UK. "Formed in Brighton with a clear aim to write the perfect soundtrack to whatever you do whilst procrastinating at your day job, Public Body pick apart the mundanity of daily life and all its annoyances in irresistible fashion." https://publicbody.bandcamp.com/    0:03:50 (Pop-up)
Karoshi Lovers  Birth, School, Work, Death   Favoriting The Revolution Is Over  Riemu  2009  With their first album „Revolution Is Over“ the Karoshi Lovers from Helsinki/FIN rocketed themselves from zero to one of the most appreciated acts of the Finnish indie-scene. A threepiece performing in a quite unusual line-up (drums, piano, guitar), fronted by female singer/pianoplayer Ms Stress, managed already then to combine catchy pop-melodies with a remarkable dark element and a theatrical stage-appearance. An apparent thing has been from the very beginning their flirting with the term "Karoshi" - Japanese for "sudden death from overwork". Not too surprising to find a cover of the Godfather's „Birth School Work Death“. And a great one if we may say so.    0:05:50 (Pop-up)
The Clash  Career Opportunities   Favoriting Sandanista!  Sony  1980  The song attacks the political and economic situation in England at the time, citing the lack of jobs available, particularly to youth, and the dreariness and lack of appeal of those that were available. They specifically mention service in the police forces in addition to jobs that are often perceived as being 'menial' such as a bus driver or ticket inspector, as well as "making tea at the BBC". The song also mentioned service in the military with "I don't wanna go fighting in the tropical heat." The line "I won't open letter bombs for you" is a reference to a former job of Clash guitarist Mick Jones, opening letters for a British government department to make sure they weren't rigged with mailbombs.    0:09:17 (Pop-up)
Pixies  U-Mass   Favoriting Trompe La Monde  4AD  1991  A classic from the Pixies! "Trompe le Monde is the fourth studio album by the American alternative rock band Pixies, released on September 23, 1991 on 4AD in the United Kingdom and on September 24, 1991, on Elektra Records in the United States. Recorded in Burbank, California, Paris and London, the album was produced by Gil Norton, and was Pixies' final studio album before their subsequent break-up two years later. Trompe le Monde is the last album to feature founding bass guitarist Kim Deal." "U-Mass" is a song about the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where Black Francis met Joey Santiago before dropping out to form Pixies. In a 2001 interview, Santiago recalled that the original guitar riff was written while they were still enrolled at the school.    0:11:45 (Pop-up)
Dead Kennedys  Terminal Preppie   Favoriting Plastic Surgery Disasters/In God We Trust, Inc.  Decay Music  1985  Plastic Surgery Disasters is the second full-length album released by punk rock band Dead Kennedys. Recorded in San Francisco during June 1982, it was produced by the band and punk record producer Thom Wilson, with Geza X getting a "special thanks" underneath the DK's/Wilson credit for additional production. (DK's guitarist East Bay Ray redundantly added his own name to the production credits on Manifesto reissues of the album.) The album is darker and more hardcore-influenced than their debut album Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables as a result of the band trying to expand on the sound and mood they had achieved with their 1980 single "Holiday in Cambodia". It was the first full-length album to feature drummer D.H. Peligro, and is frontman Jello Biafra's favorite Dead Kennedys album. According to Jello Biafra, the main musical influences for the album were Bauhaus, Les Baxter and the Groundhogs.    0:14:49 (Pop-up)
Crass  Do They Owe Us a Living?   Favoriting The Feeding of the Five Thousand  Crass  1978  The Feeding of the 5000 is the first album by the anarcho-punk band Crass. The album was recorded on 29 October 1978, by John Loder at Southern Studios and was released the same year. It was considered revolutionary in its time due to what was considered an extreme sound, frequently profane lyrical content and the anarchist political ideals in the lyrics. The album also saw the introduction of Crass's policy of ensuring cheap prices for their records. This album is considered one of the first punk albums to expound serious anarchist philosophies.    0:16:23 (Pop-up)
UV Race  Burn That Cat   Favoriting Homo  In The Red  2011  Describing their music as "avant-tard" and "idiot savant punk rock," the UV Race are an Australian outfit whose music combines the structural trappings of garage punk with a purposefully off-kilter attack that fits somewhere between deliberate primitivism and art-damaged provocation. Formed in Melbourne in 2007, the UV Race features guitarist Alistair Montfort, singer Marcus Rechsteiner, Alex Glazov on keyboards, Georgia Rose on sax and harmonica, Moses Williams on bass, and drummer Dan Stewart.    0:17:47 (Pop-up)
King Missile  Take Stuff From Work   Favoriting Mystical Shit/Fluting On The Hump  Shimmy Disc  1987  In 1985, writer John S. Hall began presenting his work at open mic poetry readings. After three shows, Hall became a "featured" poet at the Backfence, a performance venue in Manhattan's Greenwich Village. In 1986, feeling that "20 minutes of me reading poetry would be totally boring", Hall asked his guitarist friend Dogbowl (Stephen Tunney) to augment his performances with original music. Dogbowl agreed, and with the addition of bassist Alex DeLaszlo, drummer R. B. Korbet, and xylophonist George O'Malley, King Missile (Dog Fly Religion) was born.    0:19:45 (Pop-up)

The Intelligence  If You're Mad at the Traffic; You Are the Traffic   Favoriting Now, Squirm!  Vapid Moonlighting Inc.  2023  The second digital single (Aug 31) and advance preview of the Feb 16, 2024 album. "The Intelligence is an American rock band from Seattle, formed in 1999. Founded by multi-instrumentalist Lars Finberg (A Frames, Thee Oh Sees), the band currently consists of Finberg, alongside Dave Hernandez (guitar), Drew Church (bass) and Kaanan Tupper (drums)." //// Somewhere I had read that the new album was going to be along the same lines as those previous, until Lars fell in love & decided to do away with all the sardonic/jagged songs and explore something deeper. Now I can't find anything at all written up about the album, the first single, this newer single, or much of anything to do with this newest trajectory. Maybe I dreamt it. According to their Bandcamp re: the first single: "This one is wild - doing 9 singles - one every 3 weeks and a surprise at the end." The Intelligence (Bandcamp)  *   0:37:19 (Pop-up)
Jah Wobble  Driving   Favoriting A Brief History Of Now  Cleopatra Records  2023  Released Aug 4... "Does this man ever stop working? More or less fulltime on the road with his current iteration of Invaders of the Heart, with side projects aplenty squeezing into that already crammed tour schedule, yet still whipping out little nuggets of “something I prepared earlier”. Like this. You may recall last year’s Metal Box: Rebuilt In Dub, actually from the year before, his revisiting of the magisterial Public Image Limited outing of 1979, in which he, together with guitarist, Jon Klein (Siouxsie & the Banshees et al), reassembled a bevy of tracks from the original, casting it in a very idiosyncratically Wobble light, at best barely remisniscent of the original, but gloriously complementary. I guess it followed on a 2012 tour by Wobble and the late Keith Levene, the original PIL guitarist, Metal Box: Built In Dub, You can catch the drift. Klein and Wobble have now reconvened to carry on the adventure, with, this time, new material... //// Driving offers a neo-metal riff, for Wobble to intone a tale of road rage in genesis, parping sax back in the mix. Again, it is oddly compulsive. In the organ/sax middle eight, it is Can I am [re]minded of, mixed, again, with early Pink Floyd."  *   0:43:37 (Pop-up)
Public Image Ltd.  North West Passage   Favoriting End Of World  PiL Official  2023  From the 11th PiL album, released Aug 11, 2023. End of World is the first album from Public Image Ltd following the death of vocalist John Lydon's wife Nora Forster. It also features what has developed into a stable lineup with a core that has been together since 2009, and 2 members (outside of Lydon) dating back to 1987's Happy. (Bruce Smith [ex-The Pop Group] and Robert "Lu" Edmonds [ex-Damned, Billy Bragg "Bloke", also in the Mekons.] This sounds like a throwback to the earlier PiL sound, though beefier and more metal-ish, like some of their mid-80's/early-90's era work. The lyrics and vocals are a bit silly, but that's what you get sometimes. From the looks of clips online, it appears that John Lydon was having tremendous fun in the studio, despite difficult recent times.  *   0:47:24 (Pop-up)
Jah Wobble & Jon Klein  Monitor   Favoriting Spellbound - A Tribute to Siouxsie & The Banshees  Cleopatra Records  2023  Released Aug 25, this compilation includes this track by Jah Wobble (ex-PiL) and Jon Klein (ex-Banshees), who have been collaborating quite a bit lately. The original song was co-written by John McGeogh, who played in both Public Image Ltd and Siouxsie & The Banshees. I can't find any information about who the singer is on this track, but she did a remarkable interpretation. If you're looking for the album or a track this tribute, find it here: Spellbound - A Tribute To Siouxsie & The Banshees (Cleopatra Bandcamp Page)  *   0:52:10 (Pop-up)

Tell me how you met and formed the film music project first and then Memorials.' /////////////////////// 'I met Matthew in 2007 when we were both on the Too Pure label, me with Electrelane and him with It Hugs Back. We kept in touch over the years, recording and mixing little bits when we worked on our own projects. In 2013 I wrote the original soundtrack for a French independent film, Suzanne, and Matthew recorded the guitar and bass. Then in 2014, we started playing together live, playing improvised free music (saxophone, me, modular synthesizer, Matthew). We play in a few different groups like that, sometimes just the two of us and other times with other musicians. Over the years, we both started writing/recording music for film/TV, but we did it individually. So I suggested we start doing it together, because I thought it would be more fun and we could combine the things we're good at. / In 2020 I was asked to write two movie soundtracks: Tramps! and Women against the bomb, which gave us the opportunity to start working together on film soundtracks. At that time we had no intention of forming a band, but after a screening of Women Against The Bomb in Paris we were offered a concert to play the soundtrack live, and that led us to form the band MEMORIALS. So, in a way, we started an upside-down band.'" Memorials (Bandcamp)

Cibo Matto  Working For Vacation   Favoriting Stereotype A  Warner Records  1999  After working together in the noise rock band Leitoh Lychee,[11] Miho Hatori and Yuka Honda formed Cibo Matto in 1994[5] with Honda as the instrumentalist and Hatori as the vocalist (although occasionally Honda sang and Hatori contributed instrumentally).[1] In 1995, Cibo Matto released a self titled EP on El Diablo Records. The EP caught the attention of Warner Bros. Records, which signed Cibo Matto later in the year. Stereo Type A was their second release and while somewhat of a departure of the very successful Viva! La Woman...was still well received by critics and fans alike.    1:06:38 (Pop-up)
The Specials  Maggie's Farm   Favoriting Do Nothing/Maggie's Farm  Two Tone  1980  "Maggie's Farm" is described by Salon.com critic Bill Wyman as "a loping, laconic look at the service industry." Music critic Tim Riley described it as the "counterculture's war cry," but he also notes that the song has been interpreted as "a rock star's gripe to his record company, a songwriter's gripe to his publisher, and a singer-as-commodity's gripe to his audience-as-market." While there have been quite a few covers, the Specials takes an extra edgy stab at Margaret Thatcher's oppressive right wing regime, and is very in line with the Specials knack for social commentary.    1:09:55 (Pop-up)
Nots  Half Painted House   Favoriting 3  Goner Records  2019  Those of us touched by punk music and its culture acknowledge the ways its shaped our psyches – its lifestyle has the ability to grab hold of us, reshape perceptions and influence how we choose to exist. Oftentimes fueled by positivity, ways to abolish corruptness, and a desire for change, punk as a genre has the ability to elevate its followers where they, too, can become advocates for its growth. “Half Painted House” gives 3 its deserved edge – a quintessential punk declaration dedicated to feeling lost and suffocated in one’s monotonous routine and structure and how to essentially cope with its potential devastation.    1:13:28 (Pop-up)
Good News  Toast   Favoriting Same As That EP  Bingo Records  2023  The freshly released Good News EP is now out! The lyrics for 'Toast' are adapted from Anna Akhmatova's poem 'Final Toast': I drink to our ruined house, to the dolor of my life, to our loneliness together; and to you I raise my glass, to lying lips that have betrayed us, to dead-cold, pitiless eyes, and to the hard realities: that the world is brutal and coarse, that God in fact has not saved us.    1:16:46 (Pop-up)

London, UK Follow London residing, Franco-Canadian Chloé Raunet has been immersed in the world of post-punk, cold wave and her own brand of off-kilter synth-pop since the days fronting her band Battant. She’s now got a fully fledged solo project under the name C.A.R. A fan of the weirder edges of electronic music, she also DJs and co-hosts the fortnightly 239EF show on NTS Radio (formally known as Latete Atoto). Of the song, Colin Moulding says: I didn't know where it came from. That phrase popped into my head, and one line followed another. Before I knew it, I'd written three parts of the song, and the rest of it just kind of fell in line probably a day or two later. ... When I was about 16, my father wanted me to stay on in school. But by that time, I really didn't want to do anything other than music, I think. ... So, in a way, is it autobiographical? Well, a little bit. I knew somebody called Nigel at school. But I think that, when you write songs, it's a lot of things all wrapped up, like in your dreams. Your dreams are kind of bits and pieces of all the walks of life you've been in"    1:18:38 (Pop-up)
Rough Trade  High School Confidential   Favoriting Avoid Freud  High Romance Music  1980  I could write a fucking essay about this song. In fact, I'm sure someone already has. Written as an anthem to teenage hormones, it was the song’s openly gay and sexually explicit lyrics, paired with their captivating live shows and a controversial television moment, that propelled Rough Trade from the underground Toronto club scene to the national spotlight. High School Confidential ushered in a new era of sexual openness for LGBT and women artists. High School Confidential was originally written for a male lead to sing, but Pope decided to take on the song herself, recalling, “I didn’t think it would be a big deal that I would be singing about a woman. But when I sang it, it was full of innuendo — a lesbian love song. Quite frankly, we were surprised at how successful we were.” Rough Trade infamously performed High School Confidential at the 1980 JUNO Awards, when Pope, on live national television, made a gesture to touch herself that was considered obscene. The impact was felt across the music world. Staples later told the CBC that “The appearance on the JUNOs was a life-changing moment.”    1:22:16 (Pop-up)
Tuesday's Children  Summer Leaves Me With a Sigh   Favoriting High On a Hill/Summer Leaves Me Wtih a Sigh 7"  Columbia  1966  Tuesday's Children were formed in 1966 by Phil Cordell, Mick Ware and Derrick Gough who had been in a North London band called Steve Douglas and the Challengers who later changed their name to The Prophets. The Prophets did some recording with producer Joe Meek, but nothing was ever issued (we could safely assume that these lie somewhere within the infamous 'Tea Chest Tapes' collection that were sold at auction to a private bidder). When Steve Douglas and Freddie Fields left, the remaining members reformed the band as Tuesdays Children. Paul Kendrick subsequently joined on bass guitar. Tuesday's Children were signed to E.M.I. in 1966.    1:25:38 (Pop-up)

The Fall  Before The Moon Falls   Favoriting Dragnet  Step-Forward  1979  By the time this of this LP (the second full length in '79), the sole remaining founding member of the Fall was Mark E. Smith; and the merry-go-round of membership was already in full effect: "We were six like dice but we're back to five..." --- From Annoated Fall: --- "...This refers to the departure of keyboardist Yvonne Pawlett. The Fall who recorded this song were MES, Marc Riley, Craig Scanlon, Steve Hanley, and Mike Leigh //// "It may be slightly interesting to know - at least so we can see how MES was constantly rewriting lyrics between live and studio versions - that the line "We were six like dice but we're back to five" was absent in the first known live performance of the song (25 March 1979) as Yvonne Pawlett was still a member of the group."    1:37:44 (Pop-up)
Blue Orchids  Work Before The Moon Falls   Favoriting Skull Jam  Tiny Global Productions  2017  We reached out to Martin Bramah this week and he had the following to say about this track: "I wrote the original music for 'Before The Moon Falls' but I left The Fall before it was recorded. The new guys reworked the basic idea of the song, so the recorded version was quite different from my original idea. I took that music and re-used it. Writing new lyrics, it became the Blue Orchids song 'Work'! I pointed this out to my record label and we had the idea to mash the two songs together as 'Work Before The Moon Falls'." //////// From a 4-song 2017 EP, with a couple of new songs (one a cover) & a couple of curious but excellent re-workings. I realised that "Before The Moon Falls" was featured in Fall sets around the time of Martin Bramah's departure in the spring of '79, which is why I thought to ask him about the song & the Blue Orchids reworking. This 2017 EP catches the band (& Bramah) as they were ramping up to their busiest time in their 40 year career. After only releasing a couple of studio albums and handful of compilations in their first 32 years, they have now released 6 full lengths in 8 years (including this year's upcoming album) with extra splinter projects (ie. HOUSE Of ALL) releasing additional full-length LPs & rarities albums. Busy times!    1:42:43 (Pop-up)
Delacave  Before the Moon Falls   Favoriting The Fall - A French Tribute  Teenage Hate Records  2019  I did not know that this tribute album existed until about a week ago, and it makes me so so happy. This track is a fantastic reworking, from a super-solid tribute album. The French do it up right! Delacave are from Strasbourg, France. Their Bandcamp writeup translates roughly to: "Co-founding duo of the Grande Triple Alliance Internationale de l'Est composed of Seb Normal and Liliane Chansard Delacave began to make music in a very intimate space, a bedroom, discovering themselves and gathering all the imagination necessary for their slow gestation to initiate the Gloomy Wave. They connect by a large blurred gap, colourful impressionism and black baroque." The Fall - A French Tribute (via Teenage Hate Bandcamp)    1:46:55 (Pop-up)
HOUSE Of ALL  Magic Summer Sound (Joe Mckechnie remix)   Favoriting Bay City Pistols  Tiny Global Recordings  2023  Martin Bramah & other era members of The Fall remixed in their HOUSE Of ALL super-group. This was available on Bandcamp the day before today's show. Note, however, re: the actual CD itself... "WE HAVE SOLD OUT OF PHYSICAL COPIES, *BUT* IF YOU ATTEND HOUSE Of ALL's SEPTEMBER SHOWS, THERE WILL BE COPIES AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE AT THE MERCH STAND UNTIL THOSE ARE GONE TOO. (They play a handful of UK shows starting tonight Sep 7; the last of which will be on Sep 17.) //////// HOUSE Of ALL's debut album was an immediate and deserved success. Around the time of its release, the band played a limited tour of six shows, part of which were recorded by the legendary Grant Showbiz, who worked with The Fall for many years and who was nominated for a Grammy Award. //////// HOUSE Of ALL decided to release a document of the period in the wake of their debut album. "Bay City Pistols" captures five storming live tracks, including the crowd fave Wet Leg / Can cover, "Ur Mum" / "Uphill", which lasts over 10 minutes, and incredible renditions of four album tracks plus three vastly reworked remixes of songs from the debut by outside producers. ////42 minutes." "Maggie's Farm," like many Dylan songs, has been widely covered. One of the first versions was by Solomon Burke, "one of the first black singers to record a Bob Dylan song", who released it in 1965 just prior to Dylan's own single release,[14] as the flip side of his "Tonight's the Night" (Atlantic 2288). Burke's version peaked at No. 2 on the R&B charts, and No. 28 on the Pop Charts.[15]

In 1980, The Blues Band recorded a version as a commentary on then Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher's government.[16] The line, "The National Guard stands around the door" being replaced with a line about the Special Patrol Group (SPG), the controversial unit of the London Metropolitan Police then being used to quell protests. The 2-Tone ska band The Specials also recorded a version, again relating to Margaret Thatcher, replacing the words "National Guard" with "National Front."

At various times the song has also been a live favorite of Uncle Tupelo (1988–89 tours), U2 (1986–87), The Specials, Richie Havens and Tin Machine, among others. Recently there have been some reggae versions including one by Toots Hibbert off of the Is It Rolling Bob? tribute album.[17] A much heavier version is Rage Against the Machine's interpretation appearing on their 2000 covers album, Renegades. In this version the line "She's 68 but she says she's 54" has been changed to "She's 68 but she says she's 24". This is actually a change Dylan made for the electric version of "Maggie's Farm" he performed at the 1965 Newport Festival. Rage Against the Machine's version of the song was featured during the end credits of the 2010 buddy cop film The Other Guys.

The song is performed by Stephen Malkmus and The Million Dollar Bashers – a supergroup, which includes members of Sonic Youth and Television – on the soundtrack of the 2007 Dylan biopic I'm Not There.

Muse often perform a variation of the main riff from the Rage Against the Machine cover of the song as an outro to "Map of the Problematique".

The Catalan band Mazoni performed a version of "Maggie's Farm" translated into the Catalan language, "La granja de la Paula", on their album Si els dits fossin xilòfons (Bankrobber, 2007). The translated lyrics follow the English version, but the name "Maggie" is changed to "Paula".

In 2006 Silvertide covered the song for the film Lady in the Water.

The song is covered by Hot Tuna on their 1992 Live at Sweetwater album.
