So, on a lark, I went to see Tommy Emmanuel last night, with Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams opening for him. I had a couple of CD's by Emmanuel, he's quite the acoustic guitar player, but the CD's didn't give a sense of what an energetic, fun show he puts on! It was a blast, Campbell/Williams were also really good (he has credits like Phil Lesh, Little Feet, Hot Tuna). They all played together at the end, and I really enjoyed it, highly recommendeed (they're toring now).
Also saw Springsteen last Sunday (almost required to continue living in Joisey), had much fun at that one as well.

It started at 8 PM (was at the State Theater, New Brunswick). I think it ended 10:30-10:45, didn't actually clock them, but with intermission, it averages to an hour each (but I think Emmanuel did a much longer set than Campbell/Williams).
I have 2 Emmanuel CD's, they don't do the live show justice (fine as the playing on them is).

I can see why you could take it as gimmicky. As I noted, he is a performer (reminds me in a way of Louis Armstrong, he's mug, you could not notice how amazing the music was he was putting out). You could easily feel it's "too much" in concert. But his guitar playing is just unbelievable (and I came a bit skeptical, wasn't a died in the wool convert yet, though I also know a guitarist who loves Emmanuel).

I'm in the minority on this album-love Trane, love Dolphy, was excited to get it. I found the sound quality so bad (it wasn't supposed to be a professionally recorded or released date, I know), but the drums overwhelm most of the rest of the music, bass in non-existent. (my copy had a bad scratch on the beginning of side 4, I returned it and didn't ask for a replacement). .There are better live Trane/Dolphy albums, the complete Vanguard set.

There's abalone in LA? I knew of abalone up north by San Luis Obispo

Love Zawinul/Weather Report tunes from that "JACO" period. This cover seems to emphasize guitar and keys, but I can hear some tasty bass lines in the background as well.

@chresti. Chuck had to move on from his abalone gig after they fished them all out of the waters between the mainland and Catalina Island.

BOB, I do believe you were referring to the ASSOCIATION's first smash, "ALONG COMES MARY," not "Cherish." Both "Along Comes.Mary" and "Pandora's Golden Heebie Jeebies" were on their initial LP on the Valiant label before going over to Warner Bros.

So happy I picked up this Jelly Roll box used at a 50% off sale. I think it cost me $25.

@wmfromD. Right you are!! And apologies to MR. BRAINEN as well. That'll teach me to rely on my rapidly deteriorating memory. I had completely forgotten that the Association had TWO albums on Valiant before getting the WB contract. Nonetheless, loved all their stuff. Group singers extraordinaire!

Jill Gibson! Didn't you play one of her records a couple of weeks ago, BOB? Affiliated with Jan and Dean and even with the Mamas and Papas, although I can't recall ever seeing her perform with either band.

BOB, I figure you played a cut from the Coltrane/Dolphy gig at the Village Gate earlier to honor bassist Art Davis, who passed this week. Maybe today or next week you might bless your audience with a selection from Van Morrison's "Astral Weeks." Davis is inspired on this classic pop album.

Gerry, understandable confusion. Richard Davis, Art Davis, and Steve Davis were all bassists on the jazz scene. Art and Steve were both Coltrane collaborators.

An email from the International Society of Bassists: "The inspirational jazz legend, educator and social justice activist Richard Davis died on September 6 after two years in hospice care. He was 93 years old.
"Richard retired as Professor of Bass, Jazz History, and Jazz Ensemble at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2016 after 39 years of service. He previously spent more than 20 years on the New York jazz and studio scene as one of the world’s premier bassists. The Downbeat International Critics Poll named him 'Best Bassist' from 1967-1974. He recorded a dozen albums as a leader and 3,000 recordings and jingles as a sideman. His performance and recording credits include Sarah Vaughan, Eric Dolphy, Don Sebesky, Oliver Nelson, Bruce Springsteen, Van Morrison, Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand, Miles Davis, Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Band, Dexter Gordon, Ahmad Jamal and a host of other notables.
"Equally at home in the world of classical music, Richard played under the batons of George Szell, Leopold Stokowski, Igor Stravinsky, Pierre Boulez, Gunther Schuller and Leonard Bernstein.
"In 1993, he founded the Richard Davis Foundation for Young Bassists, Inc., which holds annual master classes for bassists ages 3-18. In 1998 he created the Retention Action Project, which focuses on open dialogues on subjects related to multicultural differences. He also started a Madison Chapter of The Institutes for the Healing of Racism, Inc.
"Richard received many honors and awards, including honorary doctorate degrees in Musical Arts and Humane Letters from UW-Madison, the Hilldale Award for distinguished teaching from Chancellor Emeritus Donna Shalala, an honorary doctorate of Humane Letters from Edgewood College, the Manfred E. Swarsensky Humanitarian Award from the Rotary Club of Madison, the Governor of Wisconsin Arts Award, The City of Madison Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Humanitarian Award, the Madison Area Music Association Michael St. John Lifetime Achievement Award, the Rev. James C. Wright Human Rights Award, the UW-Madison Exceptional Service Award, the Spencer Tracy Award for Distinction in the Performing Arts, and the NEA Jazz Masters Fellowship."
