Favoriting Mid-Valley Mutations with Austin Rich: Playlist from September 12, 2023 Favoriting

A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

I'm on the "young" side, so when I was coming up in the early '90's, punk was pretty well established. So I was mostly trying to play catch-up, and there was so much stuff out that was relatively current, so finding old stuff was hard. (And this was pre-internet, so you couldn't just search it.) So a collection like this is what I always dreamed of: a roadmap to stuff that I knew was out there, but just couldn't find.

The tunes about the pogo you find on this series is just a small slice of what exists when you consider that the compiler generally only included one or just a few songs from each band so often the song chosen for inclusion was not their pogo offering.

It's funny: that first GG Allin album is pretty good... and the quality drops off with each successive album.

↳ Song: "King Of Punk" by "David Peel & The Death-o-lettes"
David Peel is a very curious artist. He had a 50 year career, starting in the late 60's as a street / folk artists who wrote about smoking pot and hating cops. John Lennon became a fan, and they hung out a ton while Lennon was a live. Then punk happened, and because he was so couter-culture, his music was sort of co-opted by the early punks. He capitalized on this with a series of songs embracing it.

Ha, David Peel was pretty OG if the same David Peel that had an album, I think in Elektra.

Most all the punks I know are real sweeties. Not all but most. In Rochester, we all front tough so that's just normal here. I do remember my mom seeing my friend Josh where he worked. At Borders Books. Yes, this was a punk teen working at the bookstore. She said, "Heather, I know you say he's nice. But the way he looks scares me!" Ah, mom.
