Awww, I like "I Call Your Name". The bridge is an early use of ska patterns in Anglo music, and the nervous energy of the lyrics I probably empathize with. I can *bet* what John thought of his own song, but it's out there, it's the world's now.

I rated it in the "bottom half" of Beatles songs, but that's for the Beatles catalogue. Certainly not close to their "bottom twenty".
"Yes It Is" is my bottom Beatles number. Say, you could probably do a metal/screamo version of THAT quite well!

Yes, the American-Caribbean influence loop had started to produce the beginnings of ska in the early 60s in Jamaica, and was starting to be noticed outside of it.

Then enter Millie Small, whose '64/'65 cover of the American song "My Boy Lollipop" introduced ska to the world stage, and became the first Jamaican star internationally.

I disagree ...but I don't really rate Beatles like that...
'Call Your Name' has that Rhythmic novelty (for the era anyhow) - Lennon Vocal (always worth the admission) - & Lennon lyric (basically ...ditto. He doesn't weep @ night ...he calls her name in bed ...& screams ...I get the picture I think...) Plus nice jangly angular Rickenbacker against an EarlyBeatles R&B groove...
'Yes It Is' one of their small handful of sustained ThreePart Harmonies - with simple but interesting plays on Color in the lyric ...oh & George on VolumePedal in 1965. Always somethin' goin' on with that lot...

Some inneresting production points on "Yes It Is", always something to notice. And, even if it is my lowest rated, that's for *Beatles* songs, and I generally would prefer even "Yes It Is" to some of the commercial crap out there we're subjected to.

There is John's solo demo for "Yes It Is" out there somewhere (was it ever officially released?), and that is a good listen. And Clay used to play that track occasionally - even if he played the Beatles, he had to be different! :)

I'm teleworking today, so I have access to my "beatles ratings" spreadsheet. For fun I once rated all 215* official Beatles releases into Top 20, 50, and Half, and Bottom Half, 50 and 20. (To make the breaks, I *did* rate each by number, but only "publish" the ratings by the sextiles above).

Some people put way too much stock in ratings by number or category, but I mainly wanted to rate their catalogue by each other. When there are polls for best Beatles songs, the later releases with "advanced" production usually come out ahead of their earlier material, but you can't do that! Each era has great qualities, and all of it was generally "advanced" *for the time it came out*. So besides a fun way of organizing my current opinion, it's a way to recognize their best songs, regardless of which era.
